Main Journey
Morning Wake-Up and Breakfast Pho
Despite a busy previous day, we woke up around 7 am to clear skies and refreshing weather, unlike yesterday’s heavy rain. After a quick decision, we headed to a nearby pho spot for breakfast, ordering beef pho, pork pho, and a spring roll. While the broth was the perfect morning pick-me-up, we couldn’t handle the overwhelming mint in the herb platter, so the fresh roll ended up mostly untouched.
Juice Stop at FIVE BOYS NUMBER ONE
Next, we stopped by FIVE BOYS NUMBER ONE for fresh juice, one of our favorite places in the area. Even though it was early, the shop was open, and the grandmother inside busily made juices in her secret backroom. Sweetie, in her own little world, arranged the chairs in a row, her way of adding a bit of charm to the morning.
Coffee Cheers at Highlands Coffee
We spotted a Highlands Coffee near the beginning of Bui Vien Street, which is known as one of Vietnam’s popular coffee chains. The vibe was pretty similar to cafes we know, but Sweetie made it unique with her spirited “cheers” gesture, full of energy to start the day.
Exploring Notre Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office
We decided to take a local bus to see the Notre Dame Cathedral, and navigating the bus system was no small feat. With the help of some kind locals, we managed to find our way, and even the waiting time became fun as Sweetie asked countless questions. The bus ride itself was inexpensive, adding to the charm of exploring like a local.
Arriving at Notre Dame Cathedral, we marveled at the historic architecture. Made with materials from France, the cathedral has a timeless beauty. Close by, we stopped at the Central Post Office, designed by Gustave Eiffel. Inside, graduates were taking photos, and Sweetie, delighted by the cool space, darted around happily, letting us appreciate the building’s tilework and iron structure.
City Center Exploration and Ho Chi Minh Statue
The next stop was City Hall and its famous statue of Ho Chi Minh. By this time, the day had turned hot, and Sweetie was beginning to feel the effects of the heat, looking ready for a nap. Finally, we arrived at the Reunification Palace, but it was closed for the afternoon break. With the intense heat, we decided it was time to call a taxi.

Tips for Traveling with a Child
Early Starts are Key
Starting early helped us avoid the day’s peak heat and crowds. Mornings in Ho Chi Minh City are cooler, and heading out early let us enjoy landmarks with Sweetie before her nap time set in.
Stick to Simple Foods for Kids
Vietnamese food is flavorful, but some herbs can be overwhelming for young palates. Keep your meals simple if you have a picky eater, and don’t feel bad if certain ingredients (like mint!) go untouched.
Prepare for Public Transport
Navigating local buses can be tricky, but the low fares make it worthwhile. Locals were friendly and helpful, but for the quickest route, have a translation app ready. Keeping a few games or toys handy can also help with waits at bus stops.
Local Travel Tips
Take Breaks at Cafes and Juice Shops
Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of cafes and juice bars like Highlands Coffee and FIVE BOYS NUMBER ONE, perfect for recharging in the cool shade. Prices are very affordable, and these stops can make all the difference in the hot weather.
Visit Landmarks in the Late Afternoon
Many historical sites are better visited in the late afternoon to avoid midday heat. Not only are the temperatures cooler, but the lighting makes for great photos!
Expect Limited Access to Historical Buildings
Many colonial buildings are still in use, so access is often restricted to the exterior. Plan for a quick visit and appreciate the historical significance from the outside.

Travel Reflections
Ho Chi Minh City provided a unique look into Vietnam’s colonial past, though we were only able to appreciate most buildings from the outside. The day became almost like a series of history lessons as we moved from one spot to another. While it felt a bit like checking items off a list, the experience also gave us a deeper understanding of the city’s heritage.
Our day in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed how vital it is to adapt travel plans to a child’s needs. After seeing the must-visit landmarks, we felt ready to shift our focus to what we wanted to do – eat, relax, and explore without a strict agenda. This flexibility is key when traveling as a family, as it brings the most memorable experiences.
