Our visit to Agra was a whirlwind of anticipation and a bit of chaos, as is typical of India. With a delayed train and a baby in tow, Julie and I decided to embrace a new perspective on the Taj Mahal—by taking a boat tour instead of venturing directly inside.
The moment we saw the Taj Mahal’s East Gate from afar, the excitement became real. Even though Sweetie couldn’t fully grasp the significance, her wide-eyed curiosity and laughter at the monkeys along the path were priceless.
Waiting for the Boat
While waiting for our guide in the hotel lobby, the staff handed Sweetie a small djembe drum. Her tiny hands rhythmically beating the drum turned a simple wait into a joyful performance. Such spontaneous moments remind us how travel ignites creativity and wonder in children.
When the guide finally arrived, it was just us three and an adventurous woman from Ireland. We walked about 1.5 kilometers from the hotel to the boat dock. The journey was lined with curious monkeys that had Sweetie squealing in delight. These encounters, I realized, were some of the best gifts of world travel for her—seeing animals up close almost daily.

Sweetie was too enchanted by the long-legged birds fluttering nearby to notice the less appealing aspects. Her excitement made up for the boat ride’s brevity. Initially only 10 minutes long, it was extended after the Irish woman protested. A small win for everyone!
