Main Journey in Jaipur City Tour
With Hugh still recovering from illness, we decided to maximize our short time in Jaipur by embarking on a whirlwind city tour. Starting from our accommodation in Hotel Radoli House, we planned to explore three iconic attractions: City Palace, Hawa Mahal, and Amber Fort.
Despite the challenges, including the scorching heat and the strain of caring for Sweetie, we pressed on, determined to experience Jaipur’s famed Pink City charm.
Exploring Jaipur’s Iconic Landmarks
City Palace
Our first stop was City Palace, a beautiful blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture. The entrance fee for foreigners was steep at 500 INR, but the chance to explore this historic site was too tempting to pass up.
Sweetie took charge here, insisting on walking ahead of us and exploring independently. While her growing independence was adorable, it made us nostalgic for the times when she needed us more.
Inside the palace, we admired the intricate designs and Jaipur’s famous giant silver urns, the largest in the world. However, the lack of English explanations for exhibits made it hard to fully appreciate the history, leaving us slightly underwhelmed.
Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds)
Next, we visited Hawa Mahal, Jaipur’s iconic landmark. Known for its honeycomb-like façade and intricate lattice windows, it was designed to allow royal women to observe street festivities without being seen.
However, the structure itself was much smaller than we expected, merely a thin façade rather than a full palace. The government’s decision to block street crossings near Hawa Mahal with barriers made it tricky to get the perfect photo. Most visitors seemed to stop for a quick snapshot before moving on, and we found ourselves doing the same.
Amber Fort
Our final stop was Amber Fort, located 11 kilometers outside Jaipur. We opted for an AC1 local bus to avoid the high cost of taxis. The ride was affordable and surprisingly comfortable, with air conditioning shielding us from the midday heat.
Amber Fort was awe-inspiring, with its massive walls stretching along the hills and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The climb to the fort was steep and required navigating countless steps. Sweetie, ever eager to prove her strength, insisted on walking up herself, which she impressively accomplished.
Unfortunately, with Hugh still unwell and the midday heat draining our energy, we decided not to explore the fort’s interiors and instead admired its grandeur from the outside. We could also see Jaigarh Fort perched even higher, accessible with a combined ticket purchased at City Palace earlier, but we skipped it to conserve energy.
Tips for Traveling with a Baby
- Encourage Independence: Sweetie’s excitement to explore on her own added fun to our trip, though it required extra vigilance.
- Hydration is Key: Carry plenty of water and juice to keep your child hydrated in the desert heat.
- Plan Short Visits: Avoid cramming too many attractions into a day, especially in hot weather.
Local Travel Tips
- Uber Over Rickshaws: Rickshaw drivers in Jaipur can be difficult to negotiate with. Uber offers a cheaper and more comfortable alternative.
- Use AC Buses: Buses labeled “AC” on Google Maps are air-conditioned and a cost-effective way to travel between major landmarks.
- Be Selective with Tickets: Some attractions, like City Palace, have high entry fees with limited information for foreigners. Research beforehand to avoid disappointment.
- Best Time to Visit Amber Fort: Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the harsh midday sun.

Jaipur’s lack of efficient public transport made it challenging for budget-conscious travelers. The frequent need for rideshare or rickshaws highlighted the city’s dependence on private transportation. - Resilience and Rest
Pushing through the heat and Hugh’s illness made us appreciate the quieter moments in our journey. The day reaffirmed our need to balance exploration with rest.
After a long and exhausting day, we returned to our hotel to recharge, reflecting on the beauty and challenges of Jaipur. In the days ahead, we planned to enjoy the comfort of our accommodation, savoring a slower pace before continuing our world travels.
