Main Journey
Weโre now 77 days into our world travel with Sweetie, and todayโs mission in Cape Town was unexpected but important: finding a new telephoto lens for our DSLR before our next safari stop in Kenya.
The Day Started with a Little Panic
The lens connection on our Canon 60D had been getting looser and looser. Today it finally gave out โ the lens just popped off. We werenโt planning to use the zoom lens right away, but once we hit the Kenyan safari, itโs a must-have. So, with no time to waste, we jumped in the car and headed to V&A Waterfront Mall, one of the more modern shopping spots in Cape Town.
Sunset Stop at Cape Town Stadium
On the way, we made a quick detour to Cape Town Stadium. The timing couldnโt have been better โ the sun was dipping low, casting warm, golden light over the stadium and the coast. It felt like one of those perfect little world travel moments you canโt plan. We pulled over just to take it in.
Arrival at V&A Waterfront Mall
By the time we reached the mall, the sky was already melting into sunset hues over the ocean. The V&A Waterfront Mall looked grand and polished, with its old-European-style architecture and modern energy. Itโs the kind of place that makes you feel like youโre in a totally different part of the world โ clean, upscale, and surprisingly familiar.
Searching for the Right Lens
Inside, we checked out a few camera stores. The first one had a decent selection and some Canon options, but we decided to try Audiolens too, which turned out to be a much better experience. The staff there actually knew their stuff, and they let me test a few different lenses directly on our DSLR.
After trying out a few, we landed on the Tamron AF 70-300 F/4-5.6. It wasnโt the top-tier lens, but for the price (2,795 rand, or around 245,000 KRW), it was a good value. And more importantly โ it works. Weโll be able to capture all those safari shots of elephants, lions, and giraffes without missing a beat.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby
Traveling with Sweetie always keeps us on our toes. She was such a trooper today, even with the detour and lens shopping.
- Stay Engaged: Sweetie found a colorful photography book in the store and flipped through it happily while I tested lenses. Always look for little things to keep your baby engaged during adult-focused errands.
- Create Calm Moments: Letting Sweetie pause to enjoy the sunset with us seemed to calm her down for the rest of the trip.
- Pack Snacks for Errands: Weโve learned that even a short shopping stop can turn long. Snacks are survival.
Local Travel Tips
- V&A Waterfront Mall: This is one of the best shopping spots in Cape Town if you need electronics or camera gear. Itโs clean, safe, and easy to navigate.
- Camera Gear in Cape Town: Audiolens is recommended for both pricing and knowledgeable staff. You can test gear in-store.
- Parking: Be ready to pay for parking at major malls in South Africa, especially in Cape Town โ this was the first time on our trip we encountered this.
- Time It Right: The sunset here is absolutely breathtaking, especially from near the stadium or the waterfront. Try to plan your arrival around golden hour.
Travel Reflections
It felt so lucky that our lens gave out in a city like Cape Town and not somewhere remote. There was a bit of stress at first, but it turned into a relaxed afternoon of browsing, testing, and just soaking up the vibe of the city.
Sweetie reminded us, as always, to slow down and notice the small, beautiful things โ like how she was totally captivated by those photo prints while I was all caught up in specs and pricing.
Looking back, this day wasnโt about the camera at all. It was about slowing down to catch sunsets and sharing quiet little moments, even in the middle of a shopping mall.
