Main Journey
Discovering the Al-Khubtha Trail in Petra
Our journey through Petra began with the iconic Treasury (Al-Khazneh), but we didnโt stop there. We pushed past the bustling crowds, sidestepped camel and donkey handlers, and ventured deeper. Petra unfolded around us โ an ancient city carved into stone, its grandeur shadowed only by the sweltering heat.
With the midday sun overhead, even the shade seemed precious. Sweetie, our 30-month-old, drifted into a peaceful nap in the carrier, her tiny face serene despite the heat. Julie and I kept going, our spirits lifted by the sense of adventure.
The Ancient Wonders Along the Way
We soon arrived at the Roman-style amphitheater โ a masterpiece carved from a single rock. The sheer effort of its construction, combined with the story of the granite columns brought from over 100 kilometers away, left us in awe. Petra’s stones whispered of history.
Walking further, the path revealed ancient tombs, each with its own story. The Urn Tomb stood grand on a hill, built for the Nabataean King Malchus II around AD 70. Climbing a few steps already gave us panoramic views of the city below.
Sweetieโs curiosity brought a smile to my face. Her little fingers reached out to touch the beautifully marbled stone walls, her eyes wide with wonder.
The Ascent on the Al-Khubtha Trail
The real challenge began at the base of the Al-Khubtha Trail. The path led to a stunning panoramic view of the Treasury from above โ a view we couldn’t miss. But it meant a steep, unending staircase along the cliffside.
Julie and I made a quick decision. I would carry Sweetie, and she would manage our daypack. The climb was brutal โ step after step, the sun scorching, our legs aching. I struggled but kept going, encouraged by glimpses of the incredible landscape below.
After what felt like an eternity, we finally reached the top. And there it was โ the Treasury, framed perfectly below us between the cliffs. A view worth every drop of sweat.
A Moment of Peace, Then the Descent
We took a break at the cliff’s edge, shared a quick snack, and let Sweetie stretch her legs. The descent, though easier on the lungs, was murder on the knees, especially with Sweetie strapped to me. But we made it, exhausted but triumphant.
Reaching the main canyon, the familiar sight of the Treasury greeted us again. As we traced our steps back, I asked Julie to take a photo โ a reminder of this grueling but unforgettable day.
Finally, back at our guesthouse, we collapsed on the bed, whispering our family cheer:
โJulie! Hugh! Sweetie! Yay! We did it!โ

Tips for Traveling with a Baby
1. Stay Hydrated and Keep Cool
Petra can be scorching, especially on the trails. Keep your baby hydrated and use a sunhat for added shade.
2. Use a Comfortable Baby Carrier
A sturdy baby carrier was a lifesaver on the steep Al-Khubtha Trail. Make sure it provides proper support for both you and your baby.
3. Plan Nap Time During Hikes
Our little Sweetie slept through the toughest part of our hike. If possible, time your babyโs naps to coincide with the most strenuous parts.
4. Carry Snacks and Quick Energy Boosters
Energy bars and fruit were essential for quick breaks. Sweetie enjoyed a little snack at the viewpoint, giving her a much-needed energy boost.
5. Dress Your Baby in Breathable Clothing
With Petra’s dry heat, lightweight, breathable fabrics kept Sweetie comfortable.

Local Travel Tips
1. Start Early to Avoid the Heat
The Al-Khubtha Trail is long and exposed, so starting early gives you cooler weather and avoids the midday sun.
2. Negotiate Prices with Camel and Donkey Handlers
Expect to encounter plenty of animal handlers. If youโre considering a ride, always negotiate the price beforehand.
3. Carry Enough Water for the Entire Hike
There are limited places to refill water on the trail. We packed extra for ourselves and for Sweetie.
4. Wear Comfortable Shoes with Good Grip
The trail is a mix of uneven steps and rocky paths. Proper footwear makes a huge difference.
5. Respect the Ancient Monuments
Petraโs ruins are fragile. Avoid climbing on them or scratching the stone surfaces.
Travel Reflections
1. Petraโs Timeless Majesty
Exploring Petra felt like stepping back in time. Walking among ancient tombs and theaters made me realize just how small we are in the face of history.
2. The Power of Family Teamwork
The Al-Khubtha Trail was physically exhausting, but we made it because we worked together. Sweetie, even while napping, was our motivation.
3. The Struggle Was Worth It
That panoramic view of the Treasury from above was one of the most breathtaking sights Iโve ever seen. It was a reminder that sometimes the hardest climbs lead to the best views.
