Setting Off for Huyen Anh
After a day filled with exploration, from imperial tombs to iconic pagodas, we decided to end the evening on a delicious note by visiting a local food gem: Huyen Anh. It came highly recommended by Julie, our resident TripAdvisor and local food researcher.
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. As light rain began to fall, driving the scooter became trickier, with visibility reduced and droplets stinging our faces. Still, the promise of authentic Hue cuisine kept us going.
Finding the Hidden Gem
Finding Huyen Anh turned into a mini-adventure. Despite Google Maps, we found ourselves circling unfamiliar alleys before finally relying on kind locals for directions. Nestled deep in a quiet lane, the restaurant’s red signboard glowed like a beacon.

The restaurant was larger than expected, with a clean and welcoming atmosphere. Locals filled most of the tables, a good sign for authenticity. The prices were astonishingly low compared to other restaurants in Hue, adding to our excitement.

We started with the basics:
- Bun Thit Nuong: A dish of rice noodles topped with grilled marinated pork, fresh herbs, and vegetables, served with a tangy, sweet sauce for mixing.
- Banh Uot: Soft rice paper rolls filled with grilled pork and herbs, dipped into the same sauce.
The flavors were exceptional. The pork, grilled to perfection over charcoal, paired beautifully with the garlic-infused sauce. Julie and I share a love for charcoal-grilled food, and this dish didn’t disappoint. Sweetie, our little food critic, eagerly nibbled on the tender pork.
The prices? Incredibly affordable:
- Banh Uot: 18,000 VND (~900 KRW) for four rolls.
- Bun Thit Nuong: 22,000 VND (~1,100 KRW).
We ordered seconds without hesitation, and even with the extra dishes, the total bill came to just 80,000 VND (~4,000 KRW).
The Unique Flavor of “Moi” Mint
One surprising element of the meal was the mint, locally called “moi.” Unlike the mild mint we were used to, this had a strong, spicy kick. Sweetie was indifferent, but Julie and I decided to skip the mint for our second round—it was simply too overpowering.
The restaurant also served complimentary tea, reminiscent of the barley tea served in traditional Korean eateries. This tea had a sweet, honey-like aroma that complemented the meal perfectly.
