Main Journey

Morning Stroll to Pha That Luang

We started our day early, filled with energy after a hearty breakfast. Despite the blazing sun characteristic of Laos, Julie managed to convince me to skip the tuk-tuk ride and walk from Patuxai to Pha That Luang, one of Laos’ most iconic landmarks.

The walk was a visual treat—flowers blooming along the path and butterflies fluttering about. Sweetie was fascinated by the colorful butterflies, while Julie enjoyed capturing snapshots of the scenery. After about 20 minutes, the gleaming golden spire of Pha That Luang emerged, commanding attention against the bright blue sky.

A Closer Look at Pha That Luang

Pha That Luang has a rich history that dates back to the 3rd century, originally built by Indian Buddhist missionaries. Over centuries, the structure evolved, influenced by Khmer architecture and later expanded by King Setthathirat in the 16th century to house a relic of the Buddha. The site endured destruction during wars but has been restored to its current grandeur.

The central stupa, towering at 45 meters, is surrounded by smaller stupas of varying heights. The symmetry and design are stunning, with curved edges that emphasize its architectural beauty. On the northern side, we discovered an intricately designed temple building. Although historically there were temples on all four sides of the stupa, only the northern and southern structures remain today.

Exploring the Museum and Religious Rituals

We ventured into the museum area within the temple grounds, which required a ticket (10,000 Kip per person, approximately 1,400 KRW). Inside, locals guided us in lighting incense and offering flowers at a small altar. Their warmth and guidance made the experience more personal.

As we walked through the grounds, Sweetie entertained herself by playing peek-a-boo behind the temple columns. Despite the museum’s minimal displays and ongoing construction, the site’s architectural repetition and harmony impressed us.

Shuttle Ride to Talat Sao Shopping Mall

Exhausted from the temple tour, we decided to visit Talat Sao Shopping Mall. Initially deterred by the steep fare quoted by tuk-tuk drivers, we lucked upon a shuttle cart offering rides to the mall for just 5,000 Kip (700 KRW) per person.

At the mall, we were on a mission to find the newly released Samsung Gear 360 camera but were disappointed to find no suitable electronics stores. The mall, with its mix of traditional market stalls and modern elements, fell short of our expectations. However, it offered an interesting glimpse into the local urban vibe.

Sweetie enjoyed spotting butterflies and playing peek-a-boo at the temple. Look for simple ways to let your child interact with the surroundings to keep them entertained.

Local Travel Tips

Walking vs. Tuk-Tuks

Walking between landmarks like Patuxai and Pha That Luang is manageable if you’re up for it, but the heat can be overwhelming. Tuk-tuks are available but may require negotiation.

Affordable Transport Options

Look out for shuttles or shared rides for budget-friendly transportation, especially to locations like Talat Sao Shopping Mall.

Shopping Mall Expectations

While Talat Sao resembles a modern complex from the outside, the interior is more like a traditional market. Electronics stores and other upscale offerings may be limited.
