Main Journey in Vientiane night market playground

After a sweet nap back at our cozy guesthouse, Sweetie woke up refreshed and ready to go. Julie mentioned a playground she had spotted near the night market the day before, so we decided to take our little adventurer there.

The night market was bustling with vendors setting up their stalls, preparing for the evening crowd. Among the commotion, Sweetie excitedly ran ahead, her tiny feet carrying her toward the brightly colored playground structures.

A heartwarming surprise awaited us—a large sign proudly displaying the flags of Laos and South Korea. This playground, we discovered, was built in 2010 through a collaboration between the Korean Landscape Architecture Women’s Association and local sponsors, as a gift to the children of Laos.

Sweetie wasted no time diving into the fun, trying everything she could get her hands on. The sight of local kids laughing and playing alongside children of tourists was such a joy. It reminded me how play transcends borders and language barriers.

Events

Sweetie’s Courageous Adventures

Watching Sweetie cautiously approach the climbing structures reminded me of how gently we’ve raised her. While other kids climbed without hesitation, she needed a little encouragement. Julie and I couldn’t help but reflect on whether our “be careful” reminders have made her overly cautious.

Still, Sweetie took her time, observing other kids before taking her first tentative steps onto the equipment. It was heartwarming to see her push past her initial hesitation with a bit of courage sparked by an older “big sister” she encountered.

Making New Friends

Sweetie spotted a seesaw occupied by another child and eagerly joined in. Despite the slight awkwardness on our part as parents, the kids hit it off instantly. Moments like these are a reminder that children have an incredible ability to connect, no matter the language or culture.

The seesaw turned into games on the merry-go-round, with Sweetie laughing and spinning until she was giddy with joy. It was truly a magical experience for her—and for us, just watching her.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby

  1. Schedule Rest Before Play
A well-rested baby is a happy baby. Sweetie’s nap ensured she had the energy to fully enjoy the playground without being cranky.
  2. Bring Snacks and Water
Active play can leave little ones thirsty and hungry. Having small snacks and water handy can keep their energy up.
  3. Encourage, Don’t Push
If your baby is hesitant about trying something new, give them time. Watching peers can often inspire them to take the first step.
  4. Stay Nearby
While kids make friends easily, being close ensures you’re there for support or assistance when needed—especially for younger toddlers.
  5. Comfortable Clothing
Make sure your child is dressed in breathable, easy-to-move-in clothes to keep them comfortable during play.

Local Travel Tips

  1. Visit Early Evening
The playground comes alive as the night market gears up. Arriving early lets your baby enjoy the area before the crowds grow.
  2. Check for Local Significance
Many attractions, like this playground, have fascinating backstories. Learning about them can add depth to your visit.
  3. Pair Play with Dining
After an active session at the playground, enjoy a meal at the nearby night market. You’ll find plenty of child-friendly options like fresh fruit and simple grilled dishes.
  4. Bring Baby Gear
While the playground is safe, having essentials like wet wipes and hand sanitizer is always a good idea when traveling with little ones.
  5. Soak in the Community Vibe
Take a moment to observe the local kids and families. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the culture and feel at home in a foreign place.

Travel Reflections in Vientiane night market playground

Watching Sweetie play brought back memories of my own childhood. The way the sky changed to soft hues of orange and purple as the sun set, the laughter that filled the air, and the inevitable reluctance to leave as the day came to an end—it all felt so nostalgic.

It struck me how universal the experience of play is, transcending cultures and generations. Sweetie’s joy reminded us why we embarked on this journey—to create moments that will shape her worldview and ours, and to celebrate the beauty of connection, both within our family and with others across the world.

As we said goodbye to the playground and promised Sweetie she could return, I felt a quiet contentment. These are the moments that make traveling with a baby not only worth it but profoundly fulfilling.

Tomorrow, we’ll explore more of what Vientiane has to offer, but tonight, we’ll let Sweetie fall asleep to the sweet memories of her playground adventure.
