Main Journey in Ho Chi Minh City travel with a baby
Morning Stroll Through Local Streets
We woke up later than planned, greeted by the hustle and bustle of the backpacker district. Craving an authentic experience, we ventured beyond the tourist zones and stumbled upon a small, unassuming pho shop tucked away in an alley.
The shop didnโt have a menu, and the owner didnโt speak English. Through hand gestures, we ordered two bowls of chicken pho with bamboo shoots and coriander. While Julie found the strong coriander flavor overwhelming, I thoroughly enjoyed the local taste. Sweetie, however, needed some coaxing to finish her meal. Using her favorite doll as motivation, we succeededโparenting win!
Exploring the War Remnants Museum
After a quick return to our hotel to organize our luggage for checkout, we headed to the War Remnants Museum. This historical site gave us a sobering glimpse into the realities of the Vietnam War, including its devastating impact on the local population.
The midday heat was intense, and Sweetie, tired from the walk, quickly fell asleep in her baby carrier. This unexpected nap allowed us to explore the exhibits in peace, reflecting on the harrowing stories displayed.
A Quest for the Perfect Banh Mi
Post-museum, we embarked on a 1.5km walk to try a famous banh mi shop ranked 4th on TripAdvisor. Despite the scorching sun and Julieโs exhaustion, the promise of a culinary delight kept us going. To our dismay, the shop was closed for renovations. Fortunately, nearby De Tham Street provided plenty of alternatives, where we finally enjoyed a late but satisfying lunch.

Discovering Hidden Local Spots
Our morning adventure to find pho was a highlight. The shopโs simplicity and authenticity made it a memorable experience. These serendipitous moments remind us why we embrace wandering beyond the usual tourist paths.
Navigating Backpacker Challenges
Packing and storing our luggage after hotel checkout posed another challenge. Though the hotel kindly offered to store our bags, the unsecured storage made us wary. We carried our essential items, including electronics and tickets, in a daypack for peace of mind.

Tips for Traveling with a Child
Dining with a Toddler
Eating out with Sweetie often requires creativity. Encouraging her with fun stories or toys helps keep mealtime enjoyable. Always have a small distraction or treat ready to keep little ones engaged!
Handling Luggage on Transition Days
Days involving night trains or flights are tricky. Pack a compact day bag with essentials, including tickets, snacks, and valuables. Consider splitting bulkier items into manageable loads to keep things stress-free.
