Main Journey of Morning Beach Walk in Mauritius
Thereโs something special about mornings in Mauritius. For some reason, weโve all been falling asleep by 8 p.m. and waking up naturally at 7 a.m., fully rested. Itโs a quiet rhythm that suits this island perfectly.
This morning was slow and easy. After two months of eating out and relying on simple meals during our travels, cooking here in Mauritius feels like a small luxury. Even if itโs just for seven days, having a kitchen to make meals for the family makes this place feel more like home.
Todayโs breakfast was simple: French toast made from leftover bread for us, and a comforting bowl of porridge for Sweetie, whoโs still recovering from her upset stomach. Thankfully, Sweetie is a rice lover, so she ate her porridge happily.
After a leisurely breakfast, we decided to explore a new beachโone thatโs supposed to be even more beautiful and famous than the Grand Baie Public Beach we visited the past two days.
Events
A Stylish Morning Walk
The three of us got dressed for the beach: Sweetie and Hugh donned their swimsuits and sunglasses, looking like they were ready for a magazine cover. I even put on makeup for the first time in what felt like forever.
We set out on foot, walking past Super U once again. This time, instead of stopping at the first beach, we ventured a little further to explore more of the coastline.
Mauritiusโ Clean Street Food Scene
As we strolled, we noticed rows of street vendors selling food along the beach. Coming straight from our travels in India, we instinctively hesitated to try anything, but curiosity got the better of us.
To our surprise, the street food stalls here were impeccably clean. There were no flies or pests, and even the vendorsโ display tables were spotless. It was clear that hygiene standards are taken seriously here.
We spotted burgers with massive meat patties and other tempting snacks, but we resisted the urge to indulge. Maybe next time!
Unexpected Encounters on the Road
During our walk, we stumbled upon an express bus stop that connects Grand Baie to the Mauritian capital, Port Louis. It was an accidental discovery, but it gave us ideas for another dayโs adventure.
As we explored, we also noticed how the animals hereโsparrows, dogs, and catsโare all so well-fed. Even the birds seem chubby and content, which is fitting for what feels like a paradise island.
The people here match the vibe of the island, too. Cars slow down with a smile and a wave to let pedestrians cross the road, even when youโre only thinking about crossing. Drivers donโt honk impatiently, and thereโs an overall sense of calm and generosity that radiates from everyone.
A Rainy Retreat
We reached the beach from yesterday and continued walking, hoping to find the new one we were seeking. The sky was overcast, but we were optimisticโweather forecasts had promised sunshine after a few showers.
But as we walked further, rain began to fall. The clouds thickened, and the air turned colder, leaving us unsure if swimming would be possible today.
Reluctantly, we decided to head back home. Adjusting plans on the go has become second nature during this trip, and instead of feeling disappointed, we reminded ourselves that Mauritius is beautiful no matter the weather.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby
- Stay Flexible with Plans
Weather in tropical destinations like Mauritius can change suddenly, so always have a backup plan. If swimming isnโt possible, explore nearby attractions, or take the time to rest at home. - Pack for All Weather
Even on a sunny island, rain can come out of nowhere. Bring lightweight rain gear or an umbrella, and carry an extra layer for your little one to keep them warm in cooler weather. - Stick to Simple and Gentle Meals
Sweetieโs porridge breakfast has been a lifesaver during her recovery. Always have easy-to-digest options like rice, oats, or crackers for your baby, especially when traveling to places with unfamiliar foods.

Local Travel Tips

While Grand Baie Public Beach is lovely, Mauritius has countless other beaches waiting to be discovered. A short walk or drive can take you to quieter, more scenic spots. - Donโt Overlook Street Food
Even if youโre hesitant at first, Mauritiusโ street food scene is worth exploring. Vendors here maintain high levels of cleanliness, and the variety of snacks will tempt even the pickiest eaters. - Take Advantage of Local Transport
The express bus connecting Grand Baie to Port Louis is a great, affordable way to explore the island. If youโre looking to experience more of Mauritius, consider using local buses for day trips.
