After a delightful lunch at Restaurant Le Chamarel, we decided to explore two of the most iconic attractions in the Chamarel region: Chamarel Waterfall and the Seven Colored Earth. Both are must-visit spots in the southwest of Mauritius, offering stunning natural beauty and a glimpse into the island’s volcanic past.

The short drive from the restaurant to these attractions felt like entering a private sanctuary. The roads were lined with neatly maintained palm trees, pineapple plants, and even coffee trees. At the entrance, we purchased tickets for 450 Mauritian Rupees (approximately 14,300 KRW) for two adults, and soon we were on our way to uncover the unique charm of Chamarel.

Our first stop was the Chamarel Waterfall, said to be the tallest waterfall in Mauritius at around 100 meters. From the parking lot, it was just a short walk to the main viewing area. As we approached the edge of the cliff, the waterfall came into full view, cascading gracefully into the lush greenery below.

Sweetie, our 28-month-old, was determined to tackle the stairs leading to a higher viewpoint on her own. Watching her climb up so confidently brought a huge smile to our faces. While the waterfall itself wasn’t as grand as we had imagined, the surrounding cliffs and dense forest made the view spectacular.

Seven Colored Earth

A short drive later, we arrived at the Seven Colored Earth, one of the most famous geological attractions in Mauritius. This surreal area is made up of dunes in striking shades of red, brown, purple, and even blue, created by volcanic activity and mineral deposits like aluminum and iron.

At the entrance, we noticed a map that made the walk to the viewpoint look intimidatingly long. But to our relief, it was only about a three-minute stroll. Sweetie, who had been a little tired by this point, was happy to ride in my arms.

The dunes themselves were mesmerizing, especially against the vibrant green of the surrounding trees. The colors seemed to shift slightly as the sunlight hit them from different angles. It’s incredible how nature can create something so artistic and unique.

Off to the side, there was also a tortoise enclosure, which Sweetie loved. She was fascinated by the slow-moving giants and giggled every time one of them stretched its neck.
