Driving down the southwest coast of Mauritius was like stepping into a dream. From the sugarcane fields swaying in the golden light of the late afternoon sun to the breathtaking ocean views, this was a day of unforgettable landscapes.

After exploring Chamarel, we decided to venture further south. The road took us through endless sugarcane fields, their leaves glowing in the soft light, creating a magical atmosphere. As the sun dipped lower, we finally reached the south coast, where the tranquil beaches and dramatic cliffs left us in awe.

A Stop at the Macondé Viewpoint

Our first memorable stop was at the Macondé Viewpoint along the B9 coastal road near Baie du Cap. The road itself hugs the curves of the coastline, offering dramatic views of the ocean and cliffs.

When we parked and started walking toward the small viewpoint, I had no idea what to expect. But climbing the short staircase was so worth it—the view was simply stunning. Below us, the turquoise water shimmered, and the vast ocean seemed to stretch forever.

I couldn’t help but wonder what the water might look like earlier in the day when the sun was higher—probably a dazzling mix of blues and greens. For now, the soft evening light gave everything a calm, mysterious feel.

Sweetie was thrilled with the wind and the view, and we took plenty of family photos to capture the moment.

Le Morne: A Magical Sunset

As we continued along the coastal road, our next destination was Le Morne Peninsula, located at the southernmost tip of Mauritius. This area is famous for its towering mountain, Le Morne Brabant, and its surrounding coral lagoons.

Although we’d read about hiking up the mountain for incredible views, we quickly realized it wasn’t an option with Sweetie in tow (and honestly, we weren’t prepared for such an intense hike). Instead, we headed straight for the Le Morne Public Beach to catch the sunset.

The beach was quiet, with only a few other visitors scattered around. Julie immediately found her spot to soak in the beauty, while I ran back to the car to grab the tripod. By the time I returned, the sky had begun its transformation, shifting into hues of purple and gold.

The sunset over the water was otherworldly. The combination of the jade-green waves and the lavender clouds made it feel like we were on a different planet. Sweetie played happily in the sand while we took the rare opportunity to snap some photos of just the two of us—something that feels so special when traveling with a baby.

As the light faded, we reluctantly packed up and began our journey back to the north. Even during the long drive home, the images of the day—calm beaches, dramatic cliffs, and that unforgettable sunset—stayed vividly in our minds.

Travel Reflections in Mauritius Southwest Coast with a Baby

As I reflect on this day, I’m struck by the sheer beauty of Mauritius’s southwest coast. The dramatic landscapes, the calm beaches, and the contrast of vibrant water against towering cliffs all created an experience I’ll never forget.

Macondé Viewpoint was a pleasant surprise, offering one of the best coastal views we’ve seen on this journey. But it was Le Morne that truly stole my heart. There’s something indescribably magical about watching the sun set over such pristine waters while your child plays happily in the sand nearby.

Even the drive back, though long, was peaceful and filled with quiet reflections on the day’s adventures. Mauritius’s beaches feel almost feminine in their grace and tranquility, so different from the rugged, powerful coastlines I’ve seen elsewhere.

If I ever return to this beautiful island, I’d love to try paddleboarding near the waves or even hike Le Morne Brabant for that iconic view. For now, I’ll cherish the memories of this perfect day exploring one of the most beautiful corners of Mauritius.
