We started our day with a hearty hotel breakfast that satisfied everyone, including Sweetie, which is always a win! Today’s plan was ambitious: explore Da Nang on a rented scooter. This option struck the perfect balance between affordability, flexibility, and adventure.

Though I had never driven a scooter before, the chance to practice ahead of our future rides in Laos made it a risk worth taking. Julie and Sweetie trusted me enough to hop on, and we headed out to rent one.

Renting a Scooter in Da Nang

The rental shop near My Khe Beach had great rates: just 100,000 VND (~$5) for 24 hours. The friendly staff patiently taught me how to operate the scooter, and after trying a few, I found one that felt comfortable. We finalized the contract, leaving my driver’s license as collateral.

Sweetie didn’t have a helmet, which was a bit concerning, but we decided to keep our speeds low and prioritize safety. First stop: Linh Ung Pagoda in northern Da Nang.

Exploring My Khe Beach En Route

As we rode north, the crowds thinned, and we stumbled upon the idyllic side of My Khe Beach—quiet and picturesque. We saw the iconic large basket boats that dotted the shore. Sweetie was intrigued and kept asking, “What’s that?” It wasn’t until we reached a bustling fishing village that we learned their purpose: these “basket boats” are used to ferry fishermen to larger boats anchored offshore.

Stopping briefly, we snapped a few family photos with the sea as our backdrop before continuing toward Linh Ung Pagoda.

Linh Ung Pagoda and the Lady Buddha

The enormous Lady Buddha statue came into view long before we reached the pagoda. At 67 meters tall, it’s visible even from afar, including from our hotel. The road leading to the pagoda offered incredible views of Da Nang’s coastline.

Parking my scooter for the first time was a learning experience, but the staff were kind and operated on a donation system. Sweetie, full of energy, dashed up the steep stairs leading to the main temple area, her enthusiasm outpacing the midday heat.

We admired the intricate bonsai trees, statues, and the serene environment of the pagoda. Sweetie, already familiar with temples from past trips, eagerly mimicked us by bowing to the Buddha statue. The sense of reverence she displayed warmed my heart.

The Lady Buddha’s scale was breathtaking—so large that my camera’s wide-angle lens couldn’t capture her entirely!

A Visit to Da Nang Train Station

After the pagoda, we headed to Da Nang Train Station to address a logistical issue. Our original tickets from Da Nang to Hanoi needed a change since we planned to stop at Hue.

The station was clean and organized, with a ticket queue system in place. We learned that ticket refunds in Vietnam incur a 10% fee, which exceeded the cost of our Da Nang-Hue leg. The helpful staff advised us to simply board the train at Hue using the existing ticket, as the train would stop there anyway.

With our train plans settled, we also inquired about currency exchange, but the offered rates were poor, so we decided to wait for a better opportunity.
