Main Journey of Traveling from Agra to Delhi by AC Bus

Leaving Jostel in Agra was bittersweet. Sweetie, who had become shy around strangers due to all the attention she’d received in India, had warmed up to the staff at Jostel. Their kindness made her parting smiles a touching moment for us.

The plan was to travel from Agra to Delhi by AC bus, with tickets purchased directly at the terminal. Based on our research, there were two options: Idgah Bus Stand and ISBT Agra Terminal. While the ISBT terminal offered more choices, we opted for Idgah, thinking it would save time.

Our rickshaw driver warned us about Idgah’s limitations, insisting we’d only find non-AC buses there. Skeptical of his motives, we pressed on. Upon arriving at Idgah, however, we realized he had been right all along—AC buses to Delhi were only available at ISBT. The rickshaw driver had waited for us, and after some frustration and reflection, we accepted his offer to take us to the right place.

At the travel agency near ISBT, we finally booked tickets for an AC bus to Delhi, departing in 40 minutes.

Events

The Idgah Bus Stand Debacle

Upon arriving at Idgah Bus Stand, the chaos was overwhelming. Narrow roads were packed with old buses, and the area reeked of urine. It quickly became apparent that there were no AC buses departing from this terminal, confirming the rickshaw driver’s claims.

Feeling defeated, we exited the terminal, where the driver offered to take us to a travel agency near ISBT for just ₹50. Realizing our mistake, we accepted his help, albeit with lingering doubts about his intentions.

Booking the AC Bus

The travel agency was bustling, with foreigners and locals alike seeking tickets. We secured our seats for ₹500 each on a bus departing in less than an hour. While the bus was small and crowded, the air conditioning—though weak—offered some relief from the intense heat.

Arrival in Delhi

The journey to Delhi was mostly smooth, thanks to well-maintained highways. But as we neared the city, traffic congestion turned the last leg into a test of patience. Upon arriving at the terminal, the scene was chaotic, with rickshaw drivers aggressively competing for passengers.

Negotiating a fair price to reach Paharganj was challenging, but we finally settled on ₹250—higher than expected but acceptable given the circumstances.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby

  1. Verify Local Advice
While locals often provide helpful tips, double-checking their claims can save you time and stress.
  2. Plan for Naps
Bus travel can disrupt nap schedules, so be prepared for restless moments. Bring a soft pillow or blanket to make your baby more comfortable.
  3. Stay Cool
Indian summers are unforgiving. Always opt for AC transportation when traveling with a baby, even if it’s not luxurious.
  4. Pack Essentials
Carry plenty of water, snacks, and hygiene products like wet wipes and sanitizer for a more comfortable journey.
  5. Be Flexible
Unplanned delays and detours are common. Patience and adaptability are key when traveling with a baby.

Local Travel Tips

  1. Choose ISBT for Bus Travel
If traveling from Agra to Delhi by bus, head straight to ISBT Terminal for reliable AC buses. Idgah Bus Stand primarily caters to local non-AC buses.
  2. Negotiate Rickshaw Fares
Rickshaw drivers in India often quote high prices, especially for tourists. Start with a counteroffer of half their initial price.
  3. Stay Alert at Bus Terminals
Bus terminals can be chaotic, with touts and beggars vying for attention. Keep your belongings secure and move quickly to your next destination.
  4. Book Accommodations Ahead
Delhi can be overwhelming on arrival, so pre-book accommodations near your desired area to save time and energy.

The Idgah Bus Stand misstep was a valuable lesson in trusting local advice while balancing caution. The rickshaw driver, though persistent, ultimately had our best interests in mind, and his help saved us from more inconvenience.
