Main Journey in Bagan sunrise with a baby
The Bucket List Moment: Sunrise at Shwesandaw Pagoda
Finally, a big item on our world travel bucket list โ experiencing a Bagan sunrise โ became reality.
The alarm broke the silence at 4:30 a.m., pulling us reluctantly from bed after an exhausting night bus ride. Despite the weariness, the sounds outside โ buzzing e-bikes, clattering carriages, and chattering tourists โ reminded us that time was ticking.
We bundled up our sleepy Sweetie in an infant carrier, wrapped snugly in Julieโs scarf for warmth, and hit the still-chilly streets of Bagan. The early-morning air felt surprisingly brisk against our faces, a welcome change before the relentless heat later in the day.
Shwesandaw Pagoda: The Hunt for a Sunrise Spot
Thanks to yesterdayโs e-bike exploration, we easily found our way to Shwesandaw Pagoda, located near Ananda Pagoda. Its silhouette against the night sky, marked by the templeโs distinct dust shields and lighting, served as a perfect guide.
Arriving at the pagoda, we were greeted by hordes of early risers already climbing the steep steps for the best sunrise views. Fortunately, we secured a spot at the top eastern terrace just as the faint morning light began to creep in.
The scene was otherworldly:
- Layers of temple spires and trees emerged like shadows through the mist and haze.
- Soft smoke rose mysteriously from nearby forests, blending with the reddening sky as the sun prepared to appear.
This ethereal view, like watching monks silently begin their dawn rituals, left me speechless. It was one of those rare moments where time and place felt sacred.
Sweetie and the First Rays of Light
As the first red sliver of the sun appeared, Sweetie finally stirred in the carrier. Still groggy, she exclaimed,
โํ๋์ด ์ ์๊ณ ์ผ์ด๋ฌ์ง์ด~โ
Her innocent voice echoed across the pagoda, making the surrounding tourists smile and glance our way. Some Korean tourists even laughed, remarking about how special it was to see a baby at sunrise in Bagan.
The Realities of a Not-Perfect Sunrise
Unfortunately, not all sunrises are postcard-perfect. A layer of low clouds obscured part of the horizon, and there were no hot air balloons dotting the skies like in travel photos.
As we say, a truly breathtaking sunrise requires:
- The perfect sun angle for the season,
- Ideal weather conditions,
- Just the right amount of mist and smoke.
Todayโs scene was missing some of these elements. But even so, the golden sunlight eventually lit up the spires, creating a warm glow that made the pagodas shine.
A Small Pagoda Stop: Shwe Leik Too
On our way back to the guesthouse, we stopped at a smaller, lesser-known temple: Shwe Leik Too.
This pagoda felt almost forgotten, with visible earthquake damage and parts of its red-brick structure crumbling. A hidden narrow staircase led us up to a terrace, where we could explore in solitude.
The quiet, secretive charm reminded me of wandering through ancient tombs in Hue, Vietnam. Itโs these off-the-beaten-path spots that often bring unexpected joy in our travels.

Events
- Shwesandaw Sunrise: Watching Sweetieโs innocent reaction made this moment unforgettable, even without the โperfectโ conditions.
- Sweetieโs Popularity: Locals and tourists alike adored her, gifting her balloons and even braiding her hair.

As I shared my musings with Julie about leaving behind our own โpagodaโ one day, her unexpected reply snapped me back to reality:
โNo, too many flies.โ
