Main Journey in Bogyoke Aung San Museum Yangon

After arriving in Yangon early in the morning on the JJ Night Bus, we headed straight to our reserved guesthouse. Thanks to the host’s kindness, we could check in early, drop off our bags, and head out for a much-needed breakfast at Lucky Seven Tea House.

The delicious tea and pudding were just what we needed to re-energize after a long bus ride. By noon, after a nap to recover from the journey, we ventured out to explore Bogyoke Aung San Museum, the historical home of Myanmar’s national hero.

Key Events

1. Getting Lost and Finding the Market

Navigating Yangonโ€™s local buses was now second nature to us, but even experienced travelers can get turned around. As our bus unexpectedly changed directions, we hopped off near a lively local market. The colorful stalls bursting with fresh fruits were a pleasant surprise, but when the narrow paths led us into a seemingly unsafe neighborhood, we decided to take a taxi to the museum instead.

2. Arriving at Bogyoke Aung San Museum

The museum is located in a quiet, somewhat isolated area, making it difficult to reach. Admission was relatively high at 5,000 kyats per person, and there were very few visitors. The museum is set in the former residence of General Aung San, where he lived from May 1945 until his assassination in July 1947.

3. Exploring the Museum

The museum is modest, featuring personal artifacts, photographs, and the general’s belongings. One striking feature was his car displayed near the entrance. Inside the house, we admired the intricate balcony designs and minimalistic interiors that reflected the era.

While we didnโ€™t know much about General Aung San before our visit, we learned that he played a pivotal role in Myanmar’s independence from British rule. Heโ€™s regarded as the father of modern Myanmar, and his legacy is evident throughout the country, from statues in public squares to his image on buses.

4. Learning About Aung San Suu Kyi

Another revelation was discovering the connection between General Aung San and Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning democracy activist. She is his youngest daughter and has inherited his unyielding spirit for justice and freedom.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby

1. Plan for Long Walks

The museumโ€™s remote location means you may have to walk a fair bit. A stroller or baby carrier is highly recommended.

2. Take Frequent Breaks

With Yangonโ€™s heat and unpredictable transportation, plan rest stops or downtime to keep your baby comfortable and happy.

3. Bring Snacks and Water

While the museum doesnโ€™t have facilities for refreshments, carrying light snacks and water can keep your little one content during the visit.

4. Dress Comfortably

Light, breathable clothing is essential for Myanmarโ€™s hot and humid weather.

Local Travel Tips

  1. Use Taxis for Remote Destinations
Public transport may not always take you close to landmarks like the Bogyoke Aung San Museum. Opt for a taxi to save time and effort.
  2. Learn About General Aung San Beforehand
Familiarizing yourself with General Aung Sanโ€™s contributions to Myanmarโ€™s history will make the visit more meaningful.
  3. Visit in the Morning or Late Afternoon
Avoid the midday heat by visiting early or later in the day.
  4. Combine with Nearby Attractions
Plan your itinerary to include other landmarks or activities near the museum to make the most of your time.

Travel Reflections in Bogyoke Aung San Museum Yangon

The Bogyoke Aung San Museum offered an intimate glimpse into the life of Myanmar’s national hero and the countryโ€™s modern history. However, its small size, remote location, and limited exhibits might not appeal to all travelers.

While we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for casual tourists, history enthusiasts or those curious about Myanmarโ€™s independence story may find it worthwhile. For us, the experience was a reminder of how deeply connected the past is to the present, especially as Myanmar continues to navigate its path forward.

Yangon holds a unique charm, blending chaotic streets with moments of quiet history. As we near the end of our Myanmar journey, Iโ€™m grateful for the lessons, the warmth of its people, and the shared memories weโ€™ve created as a family.
