Main Journey in Chandigarh Le Corbusier Tour
Chandigarh, a city designed by the legendary architect Le Corbusier, was the highlight of our India journey. His architectural genius and urban planning concepts make this city a unique destination for design enthusiasts like us. However, exploring Chandigarh proved to be no small feat due to the city’s complex layout and administrative requirements.
Getting Started
We began our day with a mission to secure entry permits for the Capitol Complex, which houses key Le Corbusier-designed buildings like the High Court, Open Hands Monument, and Secretariat. Unfortunately, the process was far from straightforward.
Key Events of the Day
1. The Permit Hunt
Our first stop was the Chandigarh Department of Tourism in Sector 9. Upon arrival, we discovered it had moved to Sector 19, and after another trip, we learned that permits are now handled exclusively at the Chandigarh Tourist Information Center in Sector 1. This detour was exhausting, but it was a necessary step to explore Le Corbusier’s works.
2. Joining the Capitol Complex Tour
At the Sector 1 Tourist Information Center, we joined a guided tour scheduled for 3:00 PM. The tour included visits to the High Court, Open Hands Monument, Parliament Building, and Tower of Shadows. Entry to these buildings is now regulated, with tours led by guides and accompanied by Tourism Police.
3. Le Corbusier’s High Court
Standing before the Chandigarh High Court, we were struck by the brilliance of its design. The rectangular frame shields the building from harsh sunlight while allowing light to filter through gracefully. Unfortunately, visitors are no longer allowed inside, but even observing its exterior left a deep impression.
4. Open Hands Monument
This massive, iconic sculpture symbolizes peace and humanity, a recurring theme in Le Corbusier’s work. Though completed posthumously, the Open Hands Monument encapsulates the architect’s ideals and serves as a fitting tribute to his vision.
5. Tower of Shadows
The Tower of Shadows was a fascinating example of Le Corbusier’s experimentation with light and shade. Designed to block sunlight while allowing ventilation, it embodies his functional yet artistic approach to architecture. Observing the shadows cast by the structure was a highlight of the tour.
6. Parliament Building
The Chandigarh Parliament Building was under renovation, but we were fortunate to enter and explore its interior. The curved forms and playful voids in the concrete structure were stunning. The assembly hall’s grandeur was unforgettable, although photography inside was strictly prohibited.
7. Secretariat
The Chandigarh Secretariat was the final stop, but access was restricted to an exterior view. Its imposing structure left us longing to explore more.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby
- Prepare for Long Walks
The Capitol Complex tour involves significant walking under the sun. Bring a baby carrier, sunscreen, and a hat to keep your little one comfortable. - Pack Identification
Entry permits require original ID. Since our passports were with the Namibian embassy, we used a driver’s license as a substitute. - Stay Hydrated
Carry plenty of water and snacks for the baby, as the tour spans several hours. - Seek Shade and Rest
Use breaks between tour stops to cool off and recharge, especially for your baby.
