Main Journey

Packing Up in Da Nang

Our final morning in Da Nang started with a hearty breakfast at the hotel. Packing has become a routine by nowโ€”Julie (my wife) organizes everything into pouches, while I handle the heavy lifting, squeezing those pouches into my backpack. Despite our efficiency, packing always feels daunting with a young child.

Sweetie, our 27-month-old, seemed to understand what was happening. She asked, “Are we traveling again?” Her growing awareness of our world journey tugged at our hearts. Sometimes, she even says, “Letโ€™s go home,” making Julie and me exchange anxious glances. Itโ€™s a poignant reminder of the responsibility weโ€™ve taken on, bringing her along on this adventure.

I reassured her: “Today, weโ€™re going somewhere new, Sweetie!” Surprisingly, she accepted it without protest, even helping us pack by putting her favorite stuffed toy into her bag.

Lunch and Leisure Before Departure

With a couple of hours to spare before our bus, we left our bags at the hotel front desk and ventured out for lunch. The mid-morning heat was intense, and Sweetieโ€™s complaints of “Itโ€™s too hot!” earned her a comforting ride in my arms.

Stumbling upon a small eatery serving Suun Bi Cha (grilled pork over rice), we decided to give it a try. For just 40,000 VND (~$2), we enjoyed fragrant rice topped with smoky, char-grilled pork, complemented by fresh vegetables. As always, the magic of charcoal grilling didnโ€™t disappointโ€”it was simple yet flavorful, and Sweetie ate enthusiastically.

Back at the hotel, Julie and Sweetie explored the grounds while I caught up on blogging about our Da Nang adventures. Soon, it was time to check out and head to the bus stop.

The Open Bus to Hue

We arrived at the rental shop slightly before the 2 PM departure. To our surprise, instead of the expected sleeper bus, a minivan arrived to take us to a transfer point. This first leg brought us to Hanh Cafe, a well-known travel agency catering to backpackers. Here, we boarded the actual sleeper bus bound for Hue.

The sleeper bus, with its fully reclined seats, offered a comfortable way to travel. Sweetie quickly drifted off for her afternoon nap, lulled by the hum of the engine and the cool air-conditioning. While the bus wasnโ€™t spaciousโ€”navigating the narrow aisle required careโ€”it was clean, Wi-Fi-enabled, and a welcome break from the heat outside.

As we traveled north, the route took us past Da Nangโ€™s northern beaches and up winding mountain roads. The scenic views of lush hills and ocean vistas were mesmerizing, even from the window of the bus.

Events

Sweetieโ€™s Growing Awareness of Travel

The most heartwarming part of the day was seeing Sweetieโ€™s evolving understanding of our journey. Sheโ€™s starting to grasp the concept of traveling and has been asking thoughtful questions about where weโ€™re going next. Her cooperation in packing and her excitement for new places make these transitions smoother and more enjoyable.

Riding the Sleeper Bus to Hue

The sleeper bus was a unique experience, especially for Sweetie. The fully reclined seats were perfect for her nap, and the novelty of the bus layout kept her entertained before she dozed off. Despite the tight aisles, the ride was smooth and coolโ€”a welcome contrast to the heat of the day.

Tips for Traveling with a Child

  1. Prepare for Long Bus Rides: Choose sleeper buses for long journeys with kids. They offer more comfort and space for napping.
  2. Time Travel with Nap Schedules: Plan travel during your childโ€™s usual nap time to make the trip more manageable.
  3. Pack Essentials in Easy-to-Access Bags: Keep snacks, toys, and a change of clothes in a separate pouch to avoid rummaging through packed luggage.
  4. Explain the Journey: Take time to explain the plan to your child, even if theyโ€™re young. Sweetieโ€™s understanding of our travel days has made transitions much smoother.
