Scooter Travel in Hue

Traveling by scooter continued to be our favorite way to explore Vietnam. Renting a scooter gave us the freedom to set our own schedule and the ability to reach off-the-beaten-path destinations, like the Dong Khanh Tomb. Affordable and efficient, it added a sense of adventure to our day while allowing us to cover significant ground.

Discovering Dong Khanh Tomb

The Dong Khanh Tomb is far less visited compared to its famous counterpart, the Tu Duc Tomb, making it a quiet, almost eerie experience. It was not part of our original itinerary, but its proximity to Tu Ducโ€™s tomb piqued our interest.

Finding the Entrance

The entrance to Dong Khanh Tomb is not straightforward. Signage is minimal, and the main path leads to an abandoned temple. After some exploration, we found the correct trail: a narrow path behind the temple that wound through a small forest. Parking our scooter nearby felt slightly unnerving due to the isolation, but we trusted the peaceful surroundings.

Exploring the Grounds

As we walked deeper into the forest, the serene atmosphere was breathtaking. Tall trees cast long shadows over the mossy ground, and the golden glow of the setting sun created a magical ambiance. It felt like stepping into a different era.

The tomb itself appeared gradually, hidden among the trees. The site was surprisingly well-preserved despite its neglected appearance. Statues of stone soldiers stood solemnly, guarding the tomb with a timeless dignity.

Details of the Tomb:

  • Stone Pavilion: The tombstone of Emperor Dong Khanh was housed in a small, elegant structure.
  • Engraved Walls: Unique dragon carvings adorned the surrounding walls, exuding both regality and mystery.
  • Quiet Solitude: The absence of tourists amplified the solemn beauty of the site.

Dong Khanh, the 8th emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, ruled for only five years before passing away at the young age of 24. Walking through the tomb, we couldnโ€™t help but wonder about his life and legacy.

Evening Adventures in Hue

Dinner at Lac Thien

We ended our day with a hearty meal at Lac Thien, a restaurant we had visited previously and loved. (For detailed notes, check our earlier blog entry!) Their banh khoai and banh nam were perfect for re-energizing after a day of exploring.

Grocery Shopping at Big C Mart

Hueโ€™s Big C Mart is a haven for families traveling with kids. Sweetie lit up with excitement in the cool, familiar environment of the supermarket.

We stocked up on:

  • Fresh fruit: Mangoes (2 for ~20,000 VND)
  • Sweet treats: Coconut-flavored biscuits (a new family favorite!)
  • Essentials: Milk and water for the next day

Supermarkets in Vietnam offer a glimpse into local life, and this visit didnโ€™t disappoint. The oversized baguettes and colorful tropical fruits were particularly fascinating.

Tips for Visiting Dong Khanh Tomb

  • Getting There: Rent a scooter for flexibility. The tomb is less accessible by public transport.
  • Finding the Trail: Look for the small path behind the abandoned temple. Itโ€™s easy to miss, so ask locals if youโ€™re unsure.
  • Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon offers stunning light and cooler temperatures.
  • Family-Friendly Note: The peaceful grounds are stroller-friendly, but pack snacks and water as there are no vendors nearby.

Reflections on Hue and Family Travel

Hueโ€™s blend of history, culture, and quiet moments left a lasting impression. The Dong Khanh Tomb was a poignant reminder of how fleeting yet impactful life can be, while the evening hustle and bustle of the city brought us back to the joy of the present.

Traveling with Sweetie has taught us to embrace the balance between adventure and comfort. Whether wandering through forgotten tombs or sharing mango slices back at the hotel, these little moments make the journey unforgettable.

As we clinked our glasses of Huda Beer (with Sweetie raising her sippy cup in a cheerful toast), we couldnโ€™t help but smile. Hereโ€™s to more days filled with discovery, laughter, and family bonding!
