Main Journey of Exploring Varanasi with a baby
Walking Through Varanasi
After settling into our temporary guesthouse, we set out to explore Varanasi and search for a better place to stay. The narrow alleys and vibrant streets were as chaotic as we’d imagined, but also exuded a unique charm. Carrying Sweetie through the bustling streets in the heat was exhausting, but the rustic, vintage atmosphere of Varanasi gave us a sense of excitement.
The streets near our guesthouse felt unexpectedly clean at first, much to Julie’s surprise, as she had warned me about the dirt and cows everywhere. However, as we ventured further, we began to encounter the iconic cows and their unmistakable droppings, which earned Julie a playful “told-you-so” moment.
A Refreshing Stop: Baba Lassi
Near our guesthouse, we found Baba Lassi, a well-known spot for travelers. We indulged in coconut and plain lassi, both rich and delicious, offering a much-needed break from the heat. This place was a clear highlight for budget-friendly and authentic flavors.
Encountering the Ghats
As we approached the ghats along the Ganges River, we witnessed goats wrestling and children playing, adding to the lively atmosphere. The midday sun was intense, making it hard to enjoy the ghats fully. We decided to retreat for lunch and come back later when it would be cooler and more serene.
A Vegetarian Feast
Following a recommendation, we visited Niyati Café, known for its vegetarian curry dishes. We ordered a flavorful pea curry and dosa, both delightful. Still, after days of vegetarian meals, we found ourselves longing for some meat—a common sentiment in Varanasi’s vegetarian dining scene.
A Warm Encounter
On our way back, we met a cheerful Indian girl who introduced us to her siblings and quickly became friends with Sweetie. Despite the language barrier, the children bonded instantly, holding hands and mimicking each other’s gestures. Their pure joy reminded us of the universal language of play.
The grandmother, observing nearby, bought candies for the kids and shared some with us. Though initially hesitant, we accepted the kind gesture, grateful for the warmth and friendliness of the local community.
Finalizing Our Stay
We had planned to stay at the famous Guitar Paying Guesthouse, but a fellow Korean traveler informed us it was no longer operational. Instead, we found a spot at Jyoti Paying Guesthouse, where an air-conditioned room would be available the next day. Relieved, we reserved it for the next three days—a decision that proved wise as the relentless heat in our current room was unbearable.
That night, with only a ceiling fan to combat the heat, we set up our mosquito net for the first time during our trip and struggled to sleep. The thought of moving to an air-conditioned room the next day kept us hopeful.
