Main Journey of Flying from Yangon to Kolkata via Bangkok
Saying Goodbye to Myanmar
After a memorable seven days in Myanmar, it was time to bid farewell and head to Kolkata, India. The day started with an early checkout from our guesthouse in Yangon. The morning was chaotic with frequent power outagesโsomething we had gotten used to during our stay. Despite the disruptions, it gave me a rare glimpse into the cityโs hidden “veins,” where utilities like drainage pipes and generators quietly worked behind the scenes.
As we stepped out, the blazing sun reminded us why locals instinctively use umbrellas to shield themselves. Following their lead, we grabbed our own and ventured out for one last meal in Myanmar.
Final Taste of Myanmar
We couldnโt leave without another stop at Lucky Seven, our go-to tea shop. We ordered a feast: mohinga (Myanmar’s beloved fish noodle soup), Lucky Seven Tea, and an array of local dishes. The unique experience of a server calculating the bill mentally, without prices listed, added to the charm.
Before heading to the airport, we grabbed takeoutโsamosas, egg paratha, and chicken biryaniโto keep us fueled during the long journey ahead.
At Yangon Airport
Yangon International Airport was surprisingly modern and clean. Despite sporadic power outages causing conveyor belts to stop and start, the facilities impressed us, including a baby-friendly restroom for Sweetie. With our remaining kyat, we treated ourselves to Burger Kingโour first fast food in a while. The simplicity of the flavors (free from spices) was a delightful change.
Sweetie, thrilled with her โBurger Princessโ crown, wore it proudly all the way to the plane.
Journey to Kolkata via Bangkok
Our AirAsia flight had a layover in Bangkokโs Don Mueang Airport. The journey, though long and indirect, was budget-friendly. The first leg to Bangkok took an hour, followed by a 5-hour layover, then another hour-long flight to Kolkata.
During the layover, Sweetie discovered a play area at Don Mueang Airport and spent hours joyfully climbing, sliding, and even โparkingโ toysโa cute nod to our scooter adventures during the trip. Her excitement was contagious and kept us entertained despite the fatigue of travel.
Finally, we boarded the flight to Kolkata. Watching Myanmarโs sunset from the plane, I felt a bittersweet pang. The beautiful landscapes, warm people, and vibrant culture had left a lasting impression.
