Main Journey in Grand Baie with a Baby
Starting the Day with Baby’s Comfort in Mind
By day 4 in Mauritius, Sweetie (our 28-month-old) was still recovering from some tummy troubles, likely from the lingering effects of our time in India. Julie started the morning with her usual loving care, preparing a simple vegetable porridge to help settle Sweetie’s stomach. Sweetie wasn’t entirely back to her energetic self, but we were hopeful today’s calm and breezy plans would help her feel better.
Exploring La Cuvette Public Beach
After being rained out the day before, we finally made it to La Cuvette Public Beach, a charming spot just beyond Grand Baie’s busier areas. This small beach offered something special—no boats anchored close by, leaving the horizon wide open to the shimmering blues of the Indian Ocean. The short walk to the beach was a treat in itself, with lush palm trees providing shade and a sense of tropical seclusion.
As soon as we arrived, Sweetie began her little ritual: scanning the area for the perfect spot to play. Julie’s mood instantly lifted as the weather was perfect—warm enough for a swim but not too hot for Sweetie.

Play, Swim, Repeat
The water temperature was ideal for swimming, and we spent a blissful hour splashing in the calm waves. Unlike the more protected Grand Baie Public Beach, La Cuvette had some light waves rolling in, which made the experience a bit more exciting for us, though we had to keep a close eye on Sweetie to make sure she stayed safe.
After her lips turned a little blue from the water, we moved onto the sandy shore for some quality playtime. Sweetie was completely in her element, scooping up sand and letting it fall through her tiny fingers while giggling at the gentle breeze.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby
- Pick the Right Beach
- For calm and easy swimming with a baby, Grand Baie Public Beach is still the best choice. It’s sheltered, has minimal waves, and feels safer for little ones.
- Watch for Signs of Chilling
- Even in warm climates, babies can get cold in the water. Keep an eye out for blue lips or shivering, and always have a dry towel and warm clothes ready.
- Bring Snacks and Comfort Food
- If your baby is recovering from travel-related stomach issues, stick to gentle foods like porridge or bananas. We’ve found it helpful to carry a small insulated container to keep Sweetie’s meals warm.

Local Travel Tips
- Public vs. Private Beaches
- In Mauritius, beaches are either public or resort-owned. While public beaches like La Cuvette are beautiful and free, resort beaches often offer free amenities like non-motorized boats and loungers to their guests.
- Timing is Key
- Visit public beaches early in the day or on weekdays if you want to avoid the weekend crowds of locals.
- Be Weather-Ready
- The weather in Mauritius can be unpredictable. Always pack an umbrella or light rain jacket, especially if you’re heading out in May when rain showers are frequent.
Travel Reflections in Grand Baie with a Baby
A Parent’s Perspective
Looking back, La Cuvette was a bit more adventurous than Grand Baie Public Beach, but it felt worth it. Watching Sweetie explore the beach, play with sand, and marvel at the sparkling waves reminded me of why we travel as a family. It’s not just about seeing new places; it’s about creating shared moments that shape how Sweetie sees the world.
The Beauty of Balance
As much as we love exploring, it’s days like these—slow, easy, and close to nature—that balance out the rush of world travel. Julie and I even managed to sneak in a moment of calm, holding hands under the shade of a swaying palm tree while Sweetie napped.
Ending the Day with Gratitude
On the way back, the sky turned grey with clouds, a reminder of the fleeting nature of perfect weather. Still, our hearts were full, and after a long afternoon nap, we ended the day preparing for the next adventure: a road trip across Mauritius with a rental car.
