Main Journey in Ha Long Bay with a baby
Our familyโs world travel adventure continued with a much-anticipated day trip to Ha Long Bay. Located 170 km from Hanoi, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was a must-see for us. Traveling with a toddler, we opted for the convenience of a guided tour.
The day began earlier than any other on our trip so far. We woke before sunrise to enjoy a simple breakfast of omelets and bread at our guesthouse near Hoan Kiem Lake. Sweetie, our 27-month-old, surprised us by eating heartilyโan excellent start to a long day.
At 8 AM, the tour bus arrived to pick us up. For the next 4.5 hours, we traveled along Vietnam’s highways, punctuated by a quirky rest stop showcasing seemingly every knickknack imaginable. Sweetie stayed cheerful, marveling at the view from the bus window and dozing intermittently.

Ha Long Bay Highlights
After a long drive, we finally arrived at the Ha Long Bay port, greeted by clear skies and sparkling waters. The dramatic limestone karsts rising from the emerald sea looked just like the images on Vietnam’s 20,000 VND note.
Lunch on the Cruise
Once aboard our tour boat, we were served an unexpectedly lavish lunch. The spread included a variety of Vietnamese dishesโplenty for both adults and kids to enjoy. While Julie helped Sweetie with her meal, I indulged in the fresh seafood.
Bamboo Boat Ride
One of the day’s highlights was the bamboo boat ride. These small, hand-rowed boats wove through hidden caves and floating limestone formations, offering a peaceful and scenic perspective of Ha Long Bay. Sweetie was thrilled, her wide eyes soaking in every detail. Julie managed to snap a precious photo of her enjoying the ride.
Though the ride felt short, the serene atmosphere and gentle waves made it a magical experience for the whole family. Sweetie was reluctant to leave, wanting “one more boat ride.”
Exploring the Caves
Next, we docked at Thien Cung Cave (Heavenly Palace Cave). The climb to the entrance was steep but manageable, even with Sweetie in tow. Inside, we explored enormous stalactites and stalagmites, with formations that the guide humorously compared to dragons, lions, and even Romeo and Juliet.
At the far end of the cave, a small viewpoint offered vistas of the surrounding bay. While not particularly breathtaking, the effort of carrying Sweetie up the steps was worth it for the memory.
Return Journey
The tour wrapped up with a relaxed boat ride back to the port, followed by the bus journey to Hanoi. Exhausted from the dayโs adventures, we all dozed off on the return trip. Sweetie, in particular, seemed content and well-rested by the time we arrived at our guesthouse.

Tips for Traveling with a Toddler
- Pack Snacks and Toys
Long bus rides can be challenging for toddlers. Bring their favorite snacks, books, or small toys to keep them entertained. - Choose Guided Tours
Ha Long Bay’s distance from Hanoi makes day trips difficult to navigate independently. Opting for a reliable tour ensures a smoother experience, especially with kids. - Plan for Naps
Sweetie napped during both the bus ride and the cruise, which helped her stay cheerful throughout the day. - Dress Comfortably
Lightweight clothing and sturdy shoes are essential for exploring caves and walking around boats.
Local Travel Tips
- Select a Reputable Tour Operator
Look for established agencies like SinhTourist to avoid scams. Verify pricing and inclusions, such as meals and bamboo boat rides. - Bring Cash
Many places in Vietnam, including Ha Long Bay, operate on cash. Carry small denominations for tips or purchases. - Prepare for Weather Changes
Ha Long Bayโs weather can shift from cloudy to sunny. Bring hats, sunscreen, and a lightweight rain jacket just in case. - Bamboo Boats Over Kayaks
If traveling with toddlers, bamboo boats are safer and more family-friendly than kayaks.
