Our family—Julie, Sweetie, and I—were well into our world travel adventure when we landed in Vang Vieng, Laos. This charming town, famous for its scenic landscapes and laid-back vibe, had one culinary experience that stood out: Laos-style BBQ, known as Sin Dat.
The day was clear and warm, with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 30°C. As we wandered through Vang Vieng’s main streets, a particular BBQ restaurant kept catching our attention: Peeping Som’s BBQ, a spot bustling with travelers and locals alike. Intrigued, we decided to give it a try.

We ordered a 2-person portion of Sin Dat, priced at 39,000 kip (about 5,460 KRW per serving). The setup was unique: a combination of grilling and shabu-shabu. A shallow pot with a built-in grill was placed on the table. The edges were filled with broth, and the center was used to grill thinly sliced pork belly.
The fun began when we started creating our own dipping sauces. A base sauce, reminiscent of a peanut and soybean paste, was available. From there, we added garlic, chili, and lime juice to suit our tastes. I held back on the chili, keeping Sweetie’s palate in mind.
The broth bubbled as we added vegetables and noodles, while the pork sizzled in the center. Sweetie loved watching the process, her little face lighting up every time the food steamed up. The meal was deliciously interactive, and the flavors were both comforting and familiar.

- Pack Essentials: While the setup was clean, having wipes and a small bib for Sweetie made cleanup much easier after her curious hands explored the table.
