Main Journey in Hoi An Ancient Town

From Marble Mountain to Hoi An

After descending Marble Mountain earlier than expected, we decided to chase the sunset and explore the famous Hoi An Ancient Town for its renowned night views.

The ride from Marble Mountain to Hoi An was longer than we anticipated. Despite the relatively short distance of 20 km, our cautious pace on the scooter stretched the journey to over 40 minutes. Along the way, we stopped by Da Nang’s Han River to rest and admire the large fishing nets stretching across the water like intricate sculptures.

Sweetie, our 27-month-old, fell asleep during the ride, exhausted from the day’s adventures. Julie gently removed her sunglasses to make her nap more comfortable.

Approaching Hoi An

As we neared Hoi An, the scenery began to transform into a romantic landscape. Golden fields basked in the glow of the setting sun, and cyclists leisurely explored the countryside. The charm of Hoi An revealed itself slowly—vast fields, rivers, and a calming atmosphere that seemed worlds apart from bustling Da Nang.

We arrived at the entrance to Hoi An Ancient Town, where vehicles are restricted. After parking our scooter in a designated lot, we entered on foot, carrying Sweetie who had just woken up, excitedly pointing out the moon in the evening sky.

Exploring Hoi An Ancient Town

The first sight that greeted us was the Chùa Pháp Bảo Pagoda, adorned with vibrant flowers. Many visitors were snapping photos in front of this picturesque temple. From here, we strolled deeper into the heart of Hoi An Ancient Town, which began to glow with soft, warm lights as dusk settled.

The historic town’s streets were lined with traditional houses featuring unique architectural styles. The vibrant hanging lanterns illuminated the cobblestone pathways, creating a dreamy ambiance. Shops and cafes were neatly organized, blending seamlessly with the town’s preserved aesthetic.

Dining at Morning Glory

For dinner, we stopped at the renowned Morning Glory Restaurant, which came highly recommended. And the menu featured an array of Hoi An’s specialties, and we tried two standout dishes:

  • White Rose Dumplings: These delicate dumplings had a refined flavor that stood out as one of the best we’ve tried during our trip.
  • Banh Xeo: A crispy Vietnamese pancake served with fresh vegetables, wrapped in rice paper, and dipped in sauce. While Julie found the herbs a bit overwhelming, the dish was still a delightful experience.

The restaurant quickly filled with patrons, and a queue began forming outside as we finished our meal.

Night Strolls and Lanterns

Stepping outside, we were greeted by the enchanting sight of lantern-lit streets. The design simplicity of the lanterns—free of logos or advertisements—allowed the beauty of the town to shine. The consistency in style and careful planning created an authentic and magical atmosphere.

And, we walked slowly through the lively streets, letting Sweetie take in the colorful lights and festive energy. After some time, we reached the Thu Bon River, where the reflections of lanterns danced on the water, adding to the mesmerizing charm of the town.

Tips for Traveling with a Child

1. Plan for Longer Travel Times

The journey to Hoi An may take longer if you’re traveling by scooter, especially with a young child. Factor in frequent stops to rest and enjoy the scenery.

2. Keep Your Child Comfortable

During long rides, ensure your child is safely secured and dressed comfortably. Prepare for naps, as the soothing motion of the scooter often lulls children to sleep.
