Main Journey on the Blue Lagoon in Vang Vieng

Today, we visited the iconic Blue Lagoon, one of Vang Vieng’s most popular attractions. Known for its crystal-clear emerald waters and scenic limestone mountains, it promised a perfect day of fun and relaxation.

After a lazy morning at the guesthouse, we rented a scooter to make our way there. Renting from a local shop cost 40,000 kip ($5.60) for a full day, though we had to inspect the bike thoroughly and document its conditionโ€”common advice for avoiding disputes over damages. With 10,000 kip worth of fuel, we were ready to go.

The 30-minute journey to the Blue Lagoon was bumpy, with stretches of unpaved roads and narrow bridges requiring careful navigation. Despite the challenging terrain, the breathtaking karst landscapes along the way made every moment worthwhile.

Events

Upon reaching the Blue Lagoon, we were greeted by the dazzling sunlight reflecting off the water. Sweetie was thrilled and ready for lunch, so we grabbed some delicious pad thai and grilled chicken before jumping into the activities.

The water was colder than expectedโ€”refreshing for us but a little too chilly for Sweetie, who turned blue-lipped after just a few minutes. Still, she loved splashing around, especially while floating on a rented tube.

The highlight of the lagoon was the iconic tree with rope swings and jumping platforms. Julie and I took turns trying the swing, laughing at each otherโ€™s hesitant first attempts. Sweetie cheered us on but was equally entertained by a plane-shaped float nearby, repeating, โ€œItโ€™s a plane!โ€ with endless enthusiasm.

Tips for Traveling with a baby

  1. Plan for Chilly Water: The Blue Lagoonโ€™s water can be cold for younger kids. Bring a towel and limit swim time to avoid discomfort.
  2. Safety First: The waterโ€™s edges can be slippery, and underwater rocks are sharp in places. Watch your step and keep an eye on your child.
  3. Bring Snacks: Pack food for picky eaters or grab a meal at the lagoon before diving into activities.
  4. Consider Nap Timing: If your child is prone to naps, plan water activities earlier to avoid post-swim crankiness.

Local Travel Tips

  • Scooter Rentals: Inspect the vehicle thoroughly before renting, and photograph any pre-existing scratches to avoid disputes.
  • Fuel Efficiency: 10,000 kip worth of fuel is enough for a round trip from Vang Vieng to the Blue Lagoon.
  • Best Times to Visit: Arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy the lagoon before tour groups fill the area.
  • Parking is Free: Unlike some spots in Vietnam, there are no additional parking fees for scooters.

Travel Reflections on the Blue Lagoon in Vang Vieng

The Blue Lagoon was a wonderful mix of adventure, relaxation, and family bonding. Sweetieโ€™s joy, from watching us jump off the tree swing to spotting the โ€œplane float,โ€ reminded us why we embarked on this journey in the first place.

As we rode back to town, pausing to admire the beautiful landscapes, Sweetie fell asleep, worn out from the dayโ€™s excitement. With her snoozing in the background, Julie and I reflected on how these simple momentsโ€”water, sunshine, and shared laughterโ€”were some of the most precious of our world travel journey.
