Main Journey of Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng by minivan

Today marked the end of our stay in Luang Prabang, as we embarked on a minivan journey to Vang Vieng. After four days in this charming town, saying goodbye was bittersweet. The familiar streets, the friendly guesthouse staff, and even Sweetie’s favorite goldfish pond left us with fond memories.

Our morning started with a failed attempt to visit a recommended cafe, followed by a quick lunch of khao soi and fried pork rice at a nearby restaurant. With supplies from Indico Cafe in hand, we said goodbye to Luang Prabang and boarded our minivan.

The minivan was a Toyota model, known for being more spacious than others. Thankfully, we snagged the best seats, right behind the driver, ensuring a comfortable start to the journey. However, as the van filled up with other passengers, Sweetie had to sit on our laps, making the ride more cramped.

Events

The road to Vang Vieng was winding and uneven, with occasional bumps that slowed us down. After two hours, we stopped at a rest area where Sweetie charmed the restroom attendant and happily accepted a snack.

The mountain views were stunning, but the poor road conditions created clouds of dust that reduced visibility, forcing the van to stop several times. Despite the challenges, the journey had its moments of humor and connection. Sweetie’s “Thank you” in her tiny voice was one such highlight.

Tips for Traveling with a baby

  1. Choose the Right Seats: Aim for seats behind the driver in a minivan for more legroom and comfort.
  2. Pack Snacks and Water: Long journeys can be unpredictable, so having food and drinks handy is essential.
  3. Bring Entertainment: Keep a child’s favorite toy, book, or tablet ready for extended travel times.
  4. Prepare for Motion Sickness: Sweetie felt queasy on the winding roads, so be prepared with plastic bags, wet wipes, and a calm approach to comfort your child.
