Main Journey

Our first night in Luang Prabang turned into a nightmare we’ll never forget: our first encounter with bed bugs. Despite meticulously checking reviews on Booking.com before reserving the guesthouse, we found ourselves face-to-face with the dreaded pests.

Checking In and Red Flags

The guesthouse had seemed simple but charming when we first arrived. It lacked air conditioning, and the shared bathrooms were damp, but the hosts were friendly, even giving Sweetie a snack as a welcome gesture. Everything felt fine—until we settled in.

As we prepared for bed, Julie noticed ants near the lamp. Brushing it off as harmless, we joked about bugs before spotting something far worse: small black bugs crawling on the bed and pillows. Initially, we assumed they were cockroaches, but their rounded shape and behavior were unusual.

Curiosity led us to Google “bed bugs,” and our suspicions were confirmed. The bugs matched the photos exactly. Panic set in as we realized we were sharing our room with these relentless pests.

The Long Night

With no way to contact the guesthouse staff late at night, we improvised. I cleared off the bed, placed Sweetie and Julie in the center, and stayed up to act as a “guard,” flashlight in hand. Soon, we learned the horrifying truth about bed bugs:

  • They actively seek out humans in the dark, attracted by body heat and carbon dioxide.
  • They move quickly and bite in clusters.
  • What we saw were only the adults; juveniles are smaller and harder to spot.

By the time the bites began showing on Julie’s legs and Sweetie’s ankle, I knew we couldn’t wait until morning. I carried Sweetie in a baby carrier, and we sat on hard wooden chairs from the common area, hoping to avoid further bites.

Finding a New Place

At sunrise, exhausted but determined, we set out to find a new guesthouse. Luckily, Singharat Guesthouse had clean, spacious rooms available. For $43 for two nights (including breakfast), the room was far superior to our previous accommodation.

Events

Returning to the original guesthouse, I confronted the staff with photos and even a live bed bug I had trapped in a tissue. Initially, they denied responsibility, claiming their rooms were clean. However, the undeniable evidence forced them to refund us in full.

Tips for Traveling with a baby

  1. Check for Bed Bugs:
Inspect beds and furniture thoroughly before settling in. Look for bloodstains, dark spots, or live bugs.
  2. Stay Alert at Night:
Bed bugs are nocturnal and more active in the dark. Keep the lights on if you suspect them.
  3. Keep Bags Elevated:
Place luggage on tables or hard surfaces to avoid contamination.
  4. Bring a Travel Spray:
A small bottle of bed bug spray can provide a temporary solution in emergencies.

Local Travel Tips

  1. Avoid Online Bookings for Budget Hotels:
Inspect rooms in person before committing. Direct bookings can also save money.
  2. Recognize the Signs of Infestation:
Look for small black bugs, blood spots on sheets, or musky odors around bedding.
  3. Use Guesthouse Reviews Wisely:
Don’t ignore vague complaints about “itchiness” or “bugs.” They might be subtle warnings.
  4. Clean Everything After an Encounter:
Wash clothes in hot water and keep luggage elevated to prevent further spread.

Travel Reflections

This experience reminded us that not every aspect of world travel is glamorous. While Luang Prabang’s charm began to shine through the following day, our first night left us rattled. Watching Sweetie scratch at her bites was heart-wrenching, and the thought of bringing bed bugs to future accommodations added to our anxiety.

If you’re traveling to Laos—or anywhere in Southeast Asia—be cautious. Bed bugs are a reality in many budget accommodations, and preparation is key. Despite the frustration and exhaustion, this ordeal taught us an important lesson: never compromise on cleanliness for the sake of convenience.
