Main Journey in Luang Prabang Airport to City Center

We arrived safely in Laos aboard a tiny, charming plane that landed with a gentle confidence at Luang Prabang Airport. By the time we touched down, it was around 8 PM, and Sweetie, half-asleep and clutching tightly to Julie, was not ready to let go of her mom.

As we stepped into the dimly lit airport, we were greeted with a mix of quiet rural vibes and laid-back efficiency. The baggage was unloaded manually, with staff literally lifting items from the plane to a makeshift conveyor belt. It was both amusing and endearing, a sign of the slower pace we were about to embrace in Laos.

After clearing immigrationโ€”thankfully hassle-free due to Laosโ€™ visa-free entry for Korean citizensโ€”we moved to arrange transportation to the city center, where our pre-booked guesthouse awaited us.

The Taxi to the City

Luang Prabang Airport is known for its fixed taxi rates, a system designed to simplify transportation but one that leaves little room for negotiation. A ride to the city costs 50,000 LAK (approximately $7 USD), regardless of whether youโ€™re one person or three.

Unfortunately, all currency exchange booths had closed by 8 PM, leaving us unable to convert our money. The only option was to pay in USD, which, annoyingly, the driver insisted was $7 rather than the fairer $6. Unable to negotiate, we gave in, provided the guesthouse name, and climbed into the so-called โ€œtaxiโ€โ€”actually a minivan.

The ride to the city was quiet and surreal. Compared to Vietnamโ€™s lively streets, the road into Luang Prabang felt like a journey through a tranquil countryside. Darkness enveloped the surroundings, broken only by occasional lights from small roadside homes. As we neared the city, the bustling Night Market came into view, and we made a last-minute decision to explore it before heading to our guesthouse.

Arriving at the Guesthouse

Our driver dropped us off at the entrance of our guesthouse, where the warm glow of lights and the hum of laughter greeted us. The family that owned the place was in the middle of a gathering in the courtyard, yet they paused to welcome us warmly. They even handed Sweetie a treatโ€”a dried meat snackโ€”which she happily accepted, reinforcing her belief that simply looking at food longingly would earn her a bite.

The guesthouse itself was humble and homely. The first floor was used by the family, while the second floor housed a shared bathroom and four private rooms. We were assigned the first room on the second floor.

The space lacked air conditioning and felt a bit damp, but the familial atmosphere and kindness of the hosts made up for it. We figured this was part of the adventureโ€”a unique chance to experience the warm hospitality of Laos.

Events

Upon arriving in the city, we decided to visit the Night Market before settling in for the night. The vibrant stalls, bustling with both locals and tourists, were a stark contrast to the peaceful countryside roads we had just traveled. It was the perfect way to immerse ourselves in Luang Prabangโ€™s charm from the start.
