Main Journey

Waking up early in Mauritius usually means adventure, but today was about slowing down. We had to return our rental car, which gave us an excuse to stop by Super U, the large supermarket nearby. After days of exploring, it felt refreshing to just stroll through the aisles, doing something as ordinary as grocery shopping in a foreign country.

Yesterdayโ€™s adventure in Chamarel had an unexpected consequenceโ€”mosquito bites. While Julie and I brushed it off, Sweetieโ€™s sensitive skin reacted more intensely, with little swollen spots where the bites had been. Itโ€™s always tough seeing your baby uncomfortable, but it reminded us how unpredictable world travel with a baby can be.

We stopped at a pharmacy to find relief. The pharmacist recommended a probiotic for Sweetie, called Lactibianeโ€”a French product thatโ€™s apparently quite popular, even among parents in Korea. One of the perks of Mauritius being influenced by French culture is the easy availability of trusted French products.

With probiotics in hand and mosquito repellent stocked (we made sure to get one with DEET, despite the age restrictions, as non-DEET products hadnโ€™t worked well for us), we headed back. Our next destinationsโ€”Seychelles and Madagascarโ€”are known for their tropical climates and mosquito presence, so we needed to be prepared, especially considering malaria risks in Madagascar.

Events

The plan was originally to tour รŽle aux Cerfs today, but the tour was fully booked until tomorrow. Honestly, it felt like a blessing in disguise. After days of non-stop movement, we welcomed the chance to simply relax.

Julie prepared a simple, delicious homemade mealโ€”thereโ€™s something comforting about familiar food when youโ€™re far from home. After lunch, we headed back to our favorite spot: Grand Baie Public Beach.

The weather couldnโ€™t have been betterโ€”clear skies, a gentle breeze, and water so calm it looked like glass. The sea was perfect for swimming with Sweetie. No strong waves, just calm, shallow water where she could float and splash safely.

We brought along a beach ball gifted to us during our time in Chandigarh, and it added an extra layer of fun. Sweetieโ€™s laughter echoed across the water as we played together, tossing the ball, floating lazily, and just soaking in the sunshine.

After a while, Sweetieโ€™s lips turned a bit blue from the water. Time for some warm, sandy fun. We built sandcastles togetherโ€”Julie and I stacking towers while Sweetie added her own artistic touches. Eventually, she wanted her own “beach,” so I dug a little pit, creating her very own miniature Grand Baie. Watching her sit proudly in her tiny sandy โ€œpoolโ€ was one of those simple, perfect moments.

As the tide came in and washed away her private beach, we dug another one, because why not? Itโ€™s those little thingsโ€”sand, sea, and smilesโ€”that stick with you long after the trip is over.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby

1. Always Be Prepared for Mosquitoes

  • Buy DEET-based repellent if you’re heading to tropical destinations like Mauritius, Seychelles, or Madagascar. While DEET products are generally for ages 3+, consult with a pharmacist to make the safest choice for your child.
  • Anti-itch cream is a lifesaver for mosquito bites, especially if your baby has sensitive skin.

2. Stock Up on Baby Essentials Locally

  • Pharmacies in Mauritius carry reputable European brands. We found Lactibiane probiotics, which helped with Sweetieโ€™s digestion.
  • Donโ€™t stress if you run low on baby supplies; Mauritius has plenty of well-stocked supermarkets like Super U.

3. Choose Baby-Friendly Beaches

  • Grand Baie Public Beach is perfect for families with young children. The water is shallow, calm, and warmโ€”ideal for babyโ€™s first swim.
  • Bring familiar toys, like a beach ball, to keep your baby entertained both in the water and on the sand.

4. Flexibility is Key

  • Our canceled tour to รŽle aux Cerfs turned into a bonus rest day. Always leave room for changes in your itinerary, especially when traveling with a baby.

Local Travel Tips

1. Where to Shop

  • Super U in Grand Baie is a great spot for groceries, baby supplies, and even beach gear. Itโ€™s spacious, well-stocked, and has everything you might need.

2. Pharmacy Tips

  • Pharmacies in Mauritius are reliable, with pharmacists often fluent in both French and English. Donโ€™t hesitate to ask for recommendations.
  • French products dominate the shelves, which means high-quality skincare, baby products, and medical supplies.

3. The Best Beach for Families

  • After visiting several beaches, we found Grand Baie Public Beach to be the safest and most enjoyable for babies. The shallow waters and gentle waves make it a stress-free spot for parents.

4. Weather Insights

  • Even during cooler months (like May), Mauritius has perfect beach weatherโ€”sunny skies, mild temperatures, and low humidity. Just remember sunscreen and hats for the little one!

Travel Reflections

As I watched the tide slowly erase Sweetieโ€™s little sandpit, I felt a mix of joy and nostalgia. Travel has a way of making even fleeting moments feel eternal. Thereโ€™s something humbling about seeing your child experience the world with fresh eyesโ€”discovering the joy of floating in calm water, the texture of warm sand, or the simple thrill of digging a hole and calling it a โ€œbeach.โ€

I realized that itโ€™s not always the grand adventures that define a journey. Sometimes, itโ€™s the quiet afternoons on a public beach, the improvised games, and the soft, salty breeze.

Leaving Mauritius in a few days feels bittersweet. But thatโ€™s the beauty of world travelโ€”it teaches you to savor the moment, knowing that every destination is just a chapter in the bigger story.

As we look ahead to Seychelles, Madagascar, and eventually the Red Sea in Egypt, I carry this lesson with me: the best memories often come from the simplest days.
