Main Journey of Resting in Hue before the Night Train
Adjusting Our Plans
When we first booked our Vietnam train tickets in Ho Chi Minh City, we didn’t anticipate how our route would evolve. Originally planning to board the night train from Da Nang at 11 PM, we later realized it was more convenient to join the same train in Hue. However, this meant an early morning departure at 1:40 AM, requiring a much quieter day than usual.
Morning Errands at Dong Ba Market
After packing up at the hotel, we made a quick stop at Dong Ba Market for train snacks. Yesterday’s pineapple was so delicious that we couldn’t resist buying more. This time, we added an avocado to our haul—successfully negotiating both fruits for just 10,000 VND (~$0.50).
Dong Ba Market’s charm lies in its everyday bustle and friendly vendors. Watching the local women carefully inspect avocados for ripeness felt like a lesson in grocery shopping Vietnamese-style.
Afternoon at Coop Mart
Nearby, we visited Coop Mart, a small supermarket reminiscent of neighborhood stores back home. Here, we stocked up on bread, snacks, and milk for Sweetie to enjoy on the train. It’s always comforting to find familiar items, even in a foreign land.
Sweetie, clearly tired from the morning’s activities, drifted off for a nap in the mart’s second-floor lounge. Julie also managed a quick rest, while I stayed alert, longing for the kind of carefree sleep they enjoyed.
Coffee Break at The One Coffee
In need of an energy boost, we headed to The One Coffee, a popular café near our hotel known for its unique second-floor seating shaped like a giant coffee cup.
Julie ordered a coconut smoothie coffee, which turned out to be exceptionally refreshing. I opted for the local Vietnamese coffee, savoring its bold, bittersweet flavor as one last taste of Hue’s café culture. The café’s relaxed pace gave us time to unwind, organize photos, and even draft a blog post.
Sweet Moments with Sweetie
As I worked on my laptop, Sweetie tried her best to grab my attention with her usual antics—smiling, laughing, and reaching out to explore her surroundings. She even tried to grab the coffee cup decoration, much to our amusement. These little moments of joy reminded us why we love traveling as a family.
