Main Journey of Vietnam night train from Hue to Hanoi

A Night Train Adventure from Hue to Hanoi

On April 13, 2017, we embarked on an unforgettable journey from Hue to Hanoi via the SE8 night train. It was an adventure that tested our patience but also gave us some precious family memories.

The day began with us deciding to walk the 2 km from our hotel to the Hue train station instead of taking a taxi. It was a cool, overcast evening, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 28°C. With Sweetie wide awake, we thought, why not? She could walk alongside us, making the journey a little easier for Julie and me, who were juggling heavy backpacks.

A Serendipitous Encounter with Bun Bo Hue

Before leaving Hue, we couldn’t resist having one last meal of the city’s famous Bun Bo Hue, a spicy beef noodle soup. Our original plan to revisit a favorite spot was thwarted when the restaurant had already closed for the evening. Disappointed but determined, we kept walking and stumbled upon My Tam, a bustling local eatery filled with Hue locals.

The bowls of Bun Bo Hue here were hearty and flavorful, loaded with five types of toppings:

  • Thick cuts of pork
  • Thin slices of beef
  • Gelatinous ox-tail
  • Two kinds of fish cakes
  • Soft, tender chunks of liver

The soup was bold, aromatic, and perfectly spicy. Julie added her own twist with chili paste and pickled chilies, while Sweetie, surprisingly, enjoyed the tender liver pieces without hesitation. It was a meal to remember, and the lively atmosphere of My Tam made it all the more special.

Waiting at the Hue Train Station

Arriving at Hue Station (Ga Hue) felt like stepping into a simpler, family-oriented world. The station was abuzz with families saying tearful goodbyes, lovers embracing, and excited children running around. However, we soon discovered our train wouldn’t arrive until 1:30 AM, meaning over four hours of waiting.

To pass the time, we explored the station, watched trains arrive and depart, and Sweetie excitedly greeted every “choo-choo train” that passed by. Despite her initial excitement, fatigue soon set in, and she snuggled up on Julie’s lap, half-asleep but too restless to fully settle.

The Agonizing Wait

As the clock struck 1:40 AM, there was still no sign of our train. Delays were announced, and we were left struggling to keep our exhausted toddler comfortable. Julie bore the brunt of Sweetie’s clinginess, holding her for what felt like an eternity while we waited for the train.

Finally, at 2:10 AM, the announcement came—the train was pulling into the station. We boarded quickly and found our seats in the dimly lit sleeper car. The moment we lay down, exhaustion took over, and we all drifted into a much-needed sleep.

Tips for Traveling with a baby

1. Plan for Delays

Night trains in Vietnam can often be delayed, so always have snacks, drinks, and entertainment for your little one. Sweetie loved watching the trains go by, but when the novelty wore off, we wished we’d packed her favorite book or toy.

2. Choose Your Train Time Wisely

Avoid booking train departures after midnight if possible. Waiting for hours with a sleepy toddler can be draining for everyone. Earlier evening departures are much more manageable.

3. Pack Comfort Items

Whether it’s a favorite blanket, a stuffed toy, or even a small pillow, having something familiar can help soothe a child during long waits or on the train itself. Sweetie’s favorite blanket was a lifesaver.

4. Be Ready for Train Conditions

Vietnamese sleeper trains are comfortable but basic. Bring your own essentials like bottled water, wet wipes, and light snacks to make the journey more pleasant.
