Main Journey in Swaminarayan Akshardham Delhi

As a family traveling the world with our 28-month-old Sweetie, we embarked on a day-long adventure to explore Swaminarayan Akshardham, the worldโ€™s largest Hindu temple, located in Delhi. This architectural marvel, which opened in 2005, is an extraordinary blend of spirituality and grandeur, capturing the essence of Hindu traditions.

Getting There

We started our journey from Paharganj, a bustling traveler district, taking the Blue Line metro from Ramakrishna Ashram Marg Station to Akshardham Station. The ride was seamless, and the short 10-minute walk to the temple entrance along towering walls set the tone for the day.

At the entrance, we faced the first challenge: stringent security measures. No bags, phones, or cameras were allowed inside, creating long queues at the cloakroom. Armed with just 500 rupees and the knowledge of these restrictions, we breezed through security, grateful for our minimalist packing.

Events at Swaminarayan Akshardham

The temple complex felt like a fusion of a sacred site and a modern theme park, offering immersive experiences designed to captivate all ages.

The Temple Tour

Walking towards the central temple, we were in awe of the intricate carvings. Sculptures of elephants, deities, and spiritual figures seemed to come alive, showcasing unparalleled craftsmanship. The main hall featured a majestic statue of Swaminarayan and five revered sages, underscoring the spiritual significance of the site.

Exhibitions

While we couldnโ€™t explore all the exhibitions due to budget constraints, they sounded like an enchanting dive into history and mythology:

  • A Giant Screen Movie depicting Swaminarayanโ€™s childhood.
  • Boat Rides through 10,000 years of Indian history.
  • Musical Shows bringing Swaminarayanโ€™s teachings to life.

The Water Show

We managed to purchase tickets for the iconic water show, which started at 7:45 PM. This mesmerizing display combined fountains, lasers, pyrotechnics, and storytelling in a way that transcended language barriers. Sweetie was completely entranced, clutching our hands tightly and later shedding tears because she wanted more.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby

Traveling with Sweetie presented its challenges, but preparation made all the difference:

  • Travel Light: Leave non-essentials like strollers and heavy bags behind, especially since many items are prohibited.
  • Snacks and Hydration: Though the temple has restaurants, carrying a few quick bites for your baby (outside the temple) ensures theyโ€™re comfortable during long queues.
  • Engage Their Curiosity: Sweetie loved exploring the sculptures. Encourage your child to observe and touch where allowed.

Local Travel Tips

  • Plan for the Cloakroom: Arrive early to avoid long queues for storing prohibited items. If possible, leave these at your hotel.
  • Carry Cash: Many attractions require ticket purchases, and credit card options may not always be available.
  • Evening Visits Are Magical: While the temple is stunning during the day, its illuminated facade at night, paired with the water show, is unforgettable.
  • Public Transport: The Delhi Metro is efficient and affordable. Opt for it over taxis to avoid traffic.
