Main Journey in Varanasi to Agra Overnight Train
Leaving Varanasi behind, we embarked on an overnight train journey to Agra. The Marudhar Express, scheduled to depart at 6:15 PM, eventually left at 2:45 AMโa whopping 8 hours and 30 minutes delayed. Indian trains are infamous for their delays, but experiencing it firsthand was a test of patience and adaptability, especially with a toddler in tow.
The train station was a bustling hub of activity, from negotiating rickshaw fares to navigating waiting rooms. Initially optimistic about the delay, we watched the schedule shift repeatedly. By the time the train arrived, the exhaustion of waiting melted into relief as we finally boarded.

Saying Goodbye to Varanasi
Before heading to the station, we spent time with a local child from the guesthouse. Sweetie had a blast playing, and it reminded us how kids adapt and find joy in every corner of the world.
Our last meal in Varanasi was at a Korean restaurant, where we indulged in comforting dishes like jajangbap (black bean rice) and chicken cutletsโa final dose of familiarity before the long journey.
Navigating Varanasi Junction
Arriving at Varanasi Junction, we anticipated delays based on prior experiences. After checking the electronic boards, we settled into the upper-class waiting roomโa much-needed refuge with air conditioning and sofas.
Sweetie charmed fellow passengers, who kept her entertained while we waited for updates. The camaraderie among travelers was a silver lining in the long, chaotic evening.
Boarding the Train
When the Marudhar Express finally arrived, chaos erupted as passengers scrambled to locate their carriages. After some confusion and plenty of walking, we found our 2AC compartment. Sharing exhausted but knowing glances with fellow passengers, we quickly settled in, ready to sleep off the fatigue of the wait.

On the Train
- Use baby carriers or wraps for boarding chaosโit keeps your hands free and your baby safe.

Local Travel Tips

- Prepare for Long Delays
- Carry snacks, water, and entertainment. While stations have vendors, options might not be baby-friendly.
