Main Journey in Varanasi with Family
Varanasi, the City of Light, has a unique rhythm, and our final day here was no exception. After days of sweltering heat, the morning began with cool, cloudy weatherโa rare respite after a thunderstorm the previous night. It was the perfect atmosphere for venturing south to Assi Ghat, the last of the 80 ghats along the sacred Ganges River.
Walking through quieter streets and ghats, we found ourselves soaking in the serene atmosphere of Assi Ghat, far from the bustling activity of the main ghats. The charm of Varanasi seemed amplified hereโlocals washing clothes, children playing, and goats lazily wandering about.

Discovering the History of Assi Ghat
Assi Ghat derives its name from the number “80” and marks the southernmost ghat in Varanasi. Interestingly, this ghat was protected from expansion by a law prohibiting the construction of additional ghats, preserving its historic and cultural significance.
The expansive space around Assi Ghat gave it a more open and peaceful vibe compared to other areas. It felt like stepping into a quieter, more residential version of the city.
A Stop at Open Hands Cafรฉ
A highlight of our day was visiting Open Hands Cafรฉ, a quaint spot known for its delicious food and unique selection of handmade accessories. The cafรฉ doubles as a boutique, offering a blend of modern and traditional items.
Despite a power outage limiting the menu, we enjoyed masala tea and a decadent chocolate-banana pancake. Sweetie, our little one, had a blast exploring the colorful trinkets while Julie picked out a scarf and a postcard.
Sampling Green Lassi
A visit to Varanasi isn’t complete without indulging in a lassi, and the nearby Green Lassi lived up to its reputation. Thick, creamy, and topped with a delightful cheese-like layer, it was the perfect treat to round out our stroll.

Tips for Traveling with a Baby

- Hydration is Key: Ensure your baby stays hydrated, especially when trying new foods or drinks.
Choosing Baby-Friendly Spots
Assi Ghatโs quieter environment was ideal for Sweetie. Unlike the busy main ghats, she had space to roam freely.
Plan Breaks
Traveling in India with a baby means factoring in rest periods. Assi Ghat’s cafes and open spaces provided perfect opportunities for Sweetie to relax and recharge.
